windscreen wipers blowing fuses

Forum:

I have a 1996 hijet 993cc van. the other day i switched the rear windscreen wiper on and it blew the fuse for the wipers and the indicators (on same circuit for some reason). Replaced the fuse and it did the same again. Is it the windscreen wiper motor which needs replaced and does anyone have any advice on how to do it?

thanks.

windscreen wipers blowing fuses

Hi,
its a common fault on most Hi-Jets.
The wires will most likely be broken in or near the flexi rubber tube that spans across the tailgate to the body.
They snap due to all the opening and shutting the lid and can wear on the body causing a short, hence the fuse blowing.
Takes a few minutes to find and same to repair with a crimp joiner or two!!
Hope this helps,
Dave.

spot on!

Just checked the wires underneath the conduit both sides. On the left hand side both had insulation missing but hadn't broken so got the old insulating tape out. On the other side two of the wires were stripped of insulation which I fixed with the tape again but the blue one was broken. As the rear windscreen wiper seems to be working I take it it was the two wires on the left hand side which relates to them?

Are the three on the right for the windscreen heater? Don't have the tools to crimp the wire until my dad is back off holiday on Tuesday so it would be nice to know what the broken wire serves so I don't use it until then....any advice is appreciated...Thanks.

Hi-Jet Wires

Glad you managed to sort it, what a meal a dodgy repair garage could make of these type of faults??
Cant remember what wire is which but the rear heated screen wires do go through the same rubber conduit. It was the heated screen that i was trying to fix when i discovered the place where the wires get broken.
Regards,
Dave.
