Long Wheelbase or Short Wheelbase

Forum:

I am looking at a Fourtrak (Best 4x4 out there!)

To be honest a 7 seater would be handy for carrying extra stuff (mainly fishing takle for me and my Dad), but I am worried whether they are bad off road, because some of the places I can go because I live in Cornwall (Really good 4x4 Moorland about 20 miles and 50 miles from my house!)

Sorry if this offends anyone, but the only experience I have with good 4x4s is with Land Rover Defenders, and I know that the Defender 90 is better off road than the Defender 110.

However I know that the SWD Fourtrak is 87" wheelbase, and the LWB is 100" wheelbase, and working on similar methods as for a Land Rover Defender, the shorter wheel base is better.....

The other thing that has confused me is that from the Defender 90 to the 110 they added 20" wheelbase plus they added over 24" of body behind the rear wheel arches, which is part the reason they arent as good off road.....

Is it true that the extra wheelbase on a Fourtrak is basically fitted behind the door, in front of the rear wheel arches?

Can someone please help me, as I really want to know soon, so I can get which ever one is the best!

Thanks!

KJ

You are correct where the ext

You are correct where the extra length is, behind the door and in front of the rear wheel. Behind the rear arches, and in front of the rear of the doors is identical in both SWB and LWB versions. In my opinion, the SWB is only good if its going to be a dedicated 2 seater, as any rear seat takes up all the rear load space.
Of course, and 4wd is only as good as its own abilites and those of the drivers. While pretty capable, aftermarket spares are a bit hard to come by, forget difflocks, they are extremely rare. They will take body and suspension lifts, and will fit larger wheels and tyres. The TD intercooled diesels are the way to go.

Thanks David......

Basically then, if I need more than 2 seats the LWB is the one......

Thats the one I will go for then....It has more room in it.....

The one I am looking at is a 2.8 TDX LWB.

I wont be able to afford body or suspension lifts......It will stay pretty much standard (apart from a set of wrapround nudgebars, with 2 8" or 9" driving lamps fitted.......

I noticed in some of the interior pictures I have seen that in the centre of the dash there are 3 small dials.....

I know one is Inclinometer, but what are the other 2?

Also I noticed that on some Fourtraks around the 1988 mark that there is a light to show when the turbo is running....Is this feature on the 1993-1996 TDX models?

Thanks again...

KJ

three dials

On my 1998 TDX the dials are an inclinometer, a clock and a volt meter. Mine does not have a light to show when the turbo is running
Hope this helps Iain
