Air Horn Trouble

Forum:

Hi folks.

Ive recently come into possession of a twin air horn set that i long to fit to my 91' FT.

Now, ive done the simple bit by connecting the relay to the compressor and other bits of wires but this is where the plan stops!

The standard horn is a twin disc type so therefore have 2 wires going to each horn.

Now the airhorns i have state that all i need to do is splice the wire going to the horn,, connect to relay, then to main button going via a switch so i can select between the standard and the air. Simple??? NOPE!

As i have four wires to the standard horns, im at a loss, plus i cannot for the life of me find where the wire is that goes to the horn button!

I hope this is making sence!

So basically all im asking for is an idiots guide, start to finish, to installing air-horns!
Can any one please help???

Thanx

Horns

Hi Atticus, basically you ned to take the wires from one of the original horns and connect your air horns to them. If the horns work ok then you can either put the wires back as they were and splice your horn wires into thm two or just leave it with one electric and the air horn.

On the relay, there should be

On the relay, there should be 2 connections that close the relay. One is a power from a switch, and the other goes to earth. Try connecting your 2 horn wires to these two terminals. You then have 2 other terminals on the relay. One comes from the battery, and the other goes to the horn compressor. These 2 wires go through the internal relay switch.

Are they legal?

I recollect that twin air-horns are now illegal in the UK. Check before you proceed.

air horns

They are legal so long as they both sound at the same time.

i noticed odd goings on with my electrics when i was sorting out all my spotlights.might be same priniple or worth a look, the light switch did complete the live circuit side but instead in completed the earth side.allways a live to the lights but switch makes an earth.has been in water a lot though lol

Just want to say a huge

Just want to say a huge thanx to everyones input, but im still yet to install them!!
(not strictly my fault, ive had a dead battery for ages!)

But the time has come to start again and yep, still kinda lost!

I get what your saying David, but still, what wire from the main battery button in the steering wheel do i link up to the rocker switch in order to select between the two?
or have i got this wrong?.......

As far as im aware, ive got all the wiring right to install for sole use of the air horn if attached to a seperate button, but due to the fact i want it running though a switch so i can select between stockhorn and air horn at will but by still using main horn button (steering wheel) its all gets a bit too confusing for an old man like me!!

So please, keep the advice comming.

Thanx

Atticus.

I know how to drive 'em, race 'em, crash 'em! just not how to fix 'em!

Right it has come to light

Right it has come to light that i cannot do what i wanted by using the main horn button as the air horn button at a flick of a switch, so i have now gone and got me a separate button.

Therefore, i guess i will be using a totally seperate circuit for the air horn with no connection to the stock horn at all.
Would that cause any problems?

Air Horns

I think you are right to use a separate flick switch for your Air Horns via the relay. If you splice into the existing horn cicuit you will surely sound the lot when the original button is pressed. Therefore leave your existing horn circuit well alone. Supply the relay with a permanant live and an ignition live and an earth. The forth terminal goes to your compressor via your flick swich. Or you can take your ignition live to the relay via your flick switch. That way the relay is only operational with the igition on.

Some horns have one wire as they pick up their earth or negative from their mounting but what is being suggested would not silence the normal horn but if the splicing wire was sent to the compressor via a switch then in effect that would not sound the Air Horns if that splice circuit was interupted with the switch. It would not allow you, however, to use the AIR horns without the normal horn but would allow the normal horn to be sounded alone.

Sounds confusng but is, I'm certain correct. That's why I would have a totally seperate circut as I think its the only way you are going to be able to choose which to sound and when.

As for the MOT they will use the normal horn so no problems with that side.
