Sportrak tow electrics

Forum:

Do the UK specs actually have an integral connector for the towbar electrics, and if so, where the hell is it? I have almost ripped the facia off today following the wiring diagram looking for it.

Does the manual indicate that

Does the manual indicate that it does Unknw
If you cant find it dave..its very easy to wire up yourself...you simply splice into the rear lights wiring...if you bought the socket and multi- wire as a kit it should have come with instructions...the wires are colour coded so it easy to identify which wire operates the brake lights, indicators etc....if you dont have instructions ..do a search with google for towing electrics and thers a number of sites listed which will show you exactly how to wire it up...dont forget that its law to fit an audible or visible warning device in the vehicle to show that the trailer indicators are operating correctly..hope this helps.

It's not in the manual as far

It's not in the manual as far as I can see, but someone I know says that his was fitted by a dealers just by plugging into a generic connector. I guess I'd have to beef up the flasher relays as well?

You guess corectly. As it happens the Daihatsu one appears to have the required 'tell tale' light wired into it. There may be others available which also have this and are likely to be cheaper. (Mine was wired for towing - and two sets of rear light clusters - when I got it fortunately, however I think the unit may be on it's way out as sometimes it neglects to flash.)

Is that on the relay itse

Is that on the relay itself, or on the instrument pack?

tell-tale

Wired out from the relay itself on thin red, and black wires then fitted in a convenient* position in the lower fascia.

Don is correct...all 4 wd Daihatsu vehicles come fitted with a heavy duty flasher unit to take the extra load when tow electrics are installed. The flasher unit does indeed have 2 wires eminating from it which should be connected to a bulb holder. The bulb flashes once when indicating showing that all is well...it complies with the legal requirement for 'visual'or audible' warning.
You shoul'nt really have to bother with that'end' of things Dave...
Simply remove rear light clusters and splice into wiring following the colour coding of your multi towing loom.It really is an easy operation. If for some reason you dont have the heavy duty flasher unit fitted ..main dealers do em for around £12...dont go for cheaper unit from accessory place..cos they dont work..I know cos I tried one.

Flasher (Ooh er Missus!)

When no trailer present. It flashes as you would expect with the trailer attached. Mine does anyway.

Thanks, I suspect that could be a useful piece of information to me in the not too distant future.
