manual hubs

Forum:

Hi,

i have a 1991 fourtrak with auto hubs, i want to change these to a manual set, could it be just as simple as unbolting the auto ones and bolting on the manual ones?

thanks,

Phil

hubs

Hi,
you are working well to nite,
thats great went out for the first time today and it was soon apparent that although the hubs kicked in just fine just as soon as you reverse you loose drive in a tight spot with little or no where to go it was not good at all!

Is it only that simple on

Is it only that simple on earlier cars? I raise this point becouse I thaght they were all interchangible too. However it has been posted befor that the latter auto's (all auto's?) are six bolt? All the manuals are deff 5 bolt. I have not had any dealings with the auto's personally, so can not coment. But thought it worth bringing up as others seem to think this is the case.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Correction

Not all manuals were 5 bolt, there were 5 and 6 bolt versions fitted from the factory, these were mainly when the vehicles were fitted with manual locking as standard, and autos as an optional extra.
There were also an 8 bolt fixing, but these were heavy duty versions and not imported to European markets, mainly Asian markets.
My old Fourtrak had 6 bolt manuals fitted and my F20 has 6 bolt manuals fitted, these are both original fitments, and even had the original manufacturers designation code cast into them.

Amazing! Were either of

Amazing! Were either of your cars imports? As I've said I've never seen 6 stud on a Daihats. Obviously I haven't looked that hard at anyone elses, but of all the F20's, 25, 50's, 55, 75's, 78, 80's and Sporti's that have passed through my hands I've only ever seen 5 bolt. They have also all been manuals, which was why I was wondering if that had something to do with it.

Must say I have wondered in the past why Dihats use 5 stud, when just about every other Jap 4x4 uses 6? Could do with 6 (or even Dirol stud on my trialer. It's an F20, and they (20's and 50's) are notorious when being beaten that hard for shearing the FWH bolts off if you forget to tighten them up very, very regularly.

One guy beet it using steel rims and non free wheeling hubs. Welded the hub into the rim. Removed the rim itself to leave the centre part. Drilled this and the rim on the car, then bolted the two together. It still sheared (protecting the front drive chain from damage elswher (it was fitted with a 3.5 V8), but was much easier to fix (just new nuts and bolts). Of course it also made changing a tyre a longer and messier job, but it did the job for an out and out off roader.

Imports

Neither were imports, which left the question, are they modified and have i got to sort out others past problems.
According to the research, they were genuine parts and original fitments from the factory, then it hit home, and you have hit the nail on the head with all others are six stud.
Daihatsu are owned by Toyota, effectively; and it was these which were fitted as these, and other components were interchangeable between Daihatsu and Toyota models.
Heavy duty models in Asian markets fitted with eight stud fixings were fitted with lower gear ratios, effectively mountain ratios to cope with the terrain in many parts of the region. This is why eight stud variants were fitted.

Seen one F80 with six stud fixings, but no others to the best of my memory.

Makes you wonder why they

Makes you wonder why they didn't just put 6 stud on them all? And 6 stud wheels while they were at it. Of course Toyota didn't totaly take over Daihatsu until well into the 4traks lifetime. That's prety much what ended it's run in Europe from what I understand. Why get the 4trak up to emisions laws, when your quite happy with your Land Cruser? Have to say as well that there are many things about the Daihats 4x4's which leave me wondering why. Especially on the earlier models. Part of the charm.
