rocky/sportrack SOA conversion

Forum:

hi i have a rocky 1986 diesel 2.8 and i would like to know if doing a spring over axle conversion to rase it up its safe with the same leaf springs or will i have to purchase new leaf springs.

SOA Conversions

Spring over axle conversions are never safe conversions for road use, but it does have some advantages and disadvantages.

These conversions lift the vehicle and make its centre of gravity considerably higher, and the vehicle more unstable. These conversions entail a lot of work, such as lenghtening prop shafts, extending brake lines, and modifications to the steering components; my experience is that they are not worth it.

This still leaves the biggest problem which is that the under axle clearance remains the same, this is the biggest hinderance to off road ability. Axle clearance increases are one of the most important aspects in off road improvements.

My suggestion would be to do a small body lift (2" or 50mm) and fit larger tyres, this would be cheaper and improve the vehicle considerably, without all the time, effort, and money involved in a SOA conversion. Fit 31 X 10.5" tyres, and purchase good of road tyres, this will give a decent lift without all the associated problems.

Would have to second

Would have to second Assasins coments, except I would suggest leaving the hight alone to fit 31's, as they will fit just fine, assuming your springs arn't knacked. Also if you must lift, do a body lift (still omly a couple of inches) for the same center of gravity reasons. A body lift does not rase the heavy stuff (chassis, engine, gearbox, etc).
I have offroaded many Daihats over the years, and have never founf lifting the car to enough of an advantige to bother with all the work.
