1.3 Sirion Performance mods

Forum:

Just got myself an 06 plate 1.3 Sirion and it's a great little car. Has anyone got any recommendations for the best way to spend 2 or 3 hundred on modifications to improve the performance (power or handling)? There seems to be precious little info on this on the net.

Cheers

First off welcome. You are

First off welcome.

You are right when it comes to performance and handling mods, there ain't a great deal to choose from. Here's a start:

It's the same for the YRV, basically the same sort of car as the sirion. If you are looking for performance mods then your best getting things like a performance exhaust and filter. Try here:

Then give this bloke a try, he has already offered to tune my YRV turbo, but he is a bit far to travel for me, as he is based in Surrey:

Hope this helps?

Hey thanks for the welcome

Hey thanks for the welcome and the detailed reply, jpor. Some good links there.

Maybe a filter or exhaust system is the way forward, but someone told me that on a small engined car something like a performance filter may not make any real difference. I don't know enough to judge whether this is true or not? I wouldn't want to spend out if it's not going to give a reasonable improvement.

I'm surprised there aren't more people out there modifying the Sirion. I know the 1.3 isn't exactly a power-house, but it has that roller skate appeal of the old Peugeot 205s.

Out of interest, have you done any mods to your turbo?

No worries. The only reason

No worries.

The only reason I metioned the filter and exhaust is that you will need to find someone to remap the ECU to them to get any benefit. Therefore have a look a www.bigperformance.co.uk to see if they can remap it.

I have done plenty to my Turbo. like the Sirion it's taken time to find parts etc.. Biggest improvement mod I have done is add a D-Sport strutbrace and had a Tein lowering kit fitted (YRV's have a higher centre of gravity compared to the sirion). I have a SUS Blitz filter and SUS exhaust. But being a turbo I keep getting fuel cut off when I push it for overtaking, therefore need to find a remapper at some stage a bit closer to home.

Have piccies of mine in the Image Galeries in both 'Car' and 'Modifications' sections.

Hey nice motor! Do you see

Hey nice motor!

Do you see much improvement in handling from those lowering springs? How much hassle are they, in terms of getting around, i.e. do you have to plan routes around speed bumps or is it not an issue?

The car when I bought it was

The car when I bought it was a bog standard turbo example. Yellow wasn't a colour choice of mine (was after a Black or even a silver one), but as Daihatsu YRV turbos are quite rare, the only example close enough was 20 miles away, which was closer to others on sale (100+) and was at the right price. Never really noticed it at first but the standard suspension, even though it's supposed to be a sportier one than the standard YRV 1.3 was starting to get on my nerves as you can feel it bouncing a lot, also taking corners was a risky venture at speed etc... So spent a few weeks using Google to see what was out there. In the end contacted Tim @ www.Japaneazi.co.uk who was selling parts for the Daihatsu YRV Turbo, and he managed to track me down a D-Sport front strutbrace (D-sport = Japans Daihatsu Tuning arm), bought and fitted this and noticed how much torter the front was. Next(Again by speaking with Tim) got some Tein lowering kits on special order from Japan, and had these fitted at the local Daihatsu garge when in for it's service. But for a complete handling mod and to transform the car, I went for new wider alloys and tyres, and all 3 then transformed the car into something you could get away with chucking around corners. For some reason Daihatsu put 175 tyres on the turbo Shok and if you have crappy tyres like I did (Dunlop Sports Sad ) are bloody useless for traction, grip and taking corners in both dry and wet conditions. Luckily the tyres I have on now (Uniroyoal rallye 505 wet tyres) are brilliant, although still get the odd wheelspin Wink

As you still have a in-production car have a look at the Daihatsu supplied stuff Smile that way it won't cost you a small fortune like I have spent on mine.

Oh as for speed humps. Not an issue, as the car even though lowered to what it is, still goes over spped humps without issue, although the car is a lot more harsher. Next nod is to get teh wheel arches rolled as the tyres occassionally rub going over bumps, especially with more than 1 person in the car.

The scooby which I also own has a lowering kit on by prodrive (lowered by 25mm all-round) and I have to be slow reversing off the drive due to the front splitter as this does on occasion catch.
