I have a 993 / 1997...and the problem first started with the amber engine light coming on. The engine tried to cut out but would then clear.
It has since completely died! It drained the battery - seemed with a simple test, nothing was reaching the ignition.
Any help will be so much appreciated as the van is very good apart from this problem.

Electrical? HELP! (please)
..Thanks to both of you for help.....I've been ultra-busy..apologies.
We checked the connections and the battery is 10,000 miles old.
Rescue did a complete check also and found the connections ok.
I can only describe it as I saw it or heard it but the incident before it expired was:
Driving ok / amber engine light flashes on off and engine tries to cut-out / stopped and parked / came back turned ignition key and dashboard lights on as was amber engine light / heard an electrical sound (as touching two live wires together) from around the dashboard area / engine light goes off and am now able to turn the key and start.
This happens again next day but this time: very low dashboard lights and v v low battery charge / won't bump start either / battery now dead / nothing.
With a Roadside Rescue battery hooked up: nothing is reaching the ignition switch.
Once again, thanks for replying and I'm betting this has happened before to other owners. I'm flying around and will answer within a day or so.

sounds like a short somewhere.... somewhere being the operative word!
if you heard shorting in the dash area, id start stripping the dash to have a look.

Start with the battery.
Clarify your descripion of what is happening. A little confused!
If the circuits are dead is the battery functioning or faulty? The lead plates within the battery could be damaged.
Have you cleaned the battery conection to earth - not just the terminal but also the conection to the chasis. Also clean any secondary earth cables which connect the engine block to the chasis.

hi there had a similar problem a few months back, 1300, efi, slight difference, my off side side light stayed on till battery went flat,had help from this site.. however these little gems have a life of their own, ended up putting in to auto spark, had to get a almost full rewire, main problem was a short from the wiring under the drivers wheel arch, auto spark said it was a bugger to fix. initally the amber light went off, lost the shorting sound and the van was ok, auto spark blamed the above fault but stated the inital wiring casing was poorly made and very exposed to elements...rain snow ect.... hope you manage to fix it , cost me a few bob, however worth it in the long run......
