The time has come-----

Forum:

Well, I didnt think yesterday would come, but it has been and gone.

I havent posted for quite a while, but the older members will probably remember me. I had a 1985 F75 Rocky, fitted with Detriot Lockers front and rear, and factory PTO winch, amongst a whole heap of other modifications. I have owned it for about 15 years.

A job change about 15 months ago now sees me working away from home for extended periods, and a 600km round trip to get to work. With the need to have a more reliable and comfortable and cheaper vehicle to do this trip, I bought a 1600 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad. As such, the Rocky saw less and less use, and certainly virtually nil 4wding (by way of example- I killed the right front CV in Feb last year, and hadnt repaired it till this week) One of the benefits of my new job is the opportunity to lease a newer vehicle. And this is what I have done.

A 2005 Nissan Patrol very shortly becomes my drive. Once acquired, its first trip is to a local ARB store, to get air lockers, 2 inch lift, snorkle, dual batteries, and winch fitted. So, with this something has to go. So yesterday, my old faithful Rocky was sold. It has gone to someone who wants to do it up to get back on the road.

I havent departed the Daihatsu marque completely, as one daughter owns an F80 Rocky, and the other daughter owns a Charade. I will still wander in and out every now and then, hopefully giving the odd bit of advice when I can.

Cheers
Bundy

How I got them is easy Not

How I got them is easy

Not long after I bought the Rocky- 15 years ago, I ordered a Detriot in from the states through a local parts supplier. At that time, Trac Tech still manufactured them. It was duely fitted, and I went merrily on my way. Then, about 6 years later, I happened to contact a 4wd club president in a location I was holidaying at. When he saw what I drove, he asked me if I was interested in a Detriot Locker for it, as he had one in his shed, that used to be fitted to his Rocky and was removed before he sold it. I bought it instantly, fitted it, and it has been double locked since then.

Tell me about their scarcity, I know all about it. The last one sold over here on ebay for AU$1300. So given that, the new owner scored a bargain for the whole vehicle including lockers and winch for around double what the last locker sold for.

Noob

I'm going to sound like a noob.....but, whats a locker?

a locker

Its something you put your stinky trainers and towel in at the gym - lol, no only kidding, its the differentials in the axles, a locker 'locks' the diff so that both wheels on either side turn the same amount of revolutions with equal power, in a car/vehicle a differential sends power sideways through shafts to the wheels, the differential has to be able to spin one side and not the other so that the vehicle can turn a corner, what happens is that as you turn the outer wheel it has to travel further than the other on the inside, when off roading youll see one wheel spin and the other stationary, because the power is going to the easiest tyre to turn, a locker - locks them together to turn together for traction- clear as mud.
