YRV Turbo Service Items

Forum:

I have gone through a few of the forum topics and come up with the following list of what I am going to do:

Brakes:
Front Discs or Drilled & Grooved
Front Pads

Filters:
Oil Filter
Air Filter (For MOT's)

Spark Plugs - Iridium BKR6EIX or Denso IK20

Oil - good brand, depends on price, fully synthetic 10W30 or 10W40

Any suggestions/comments?
Do the rear brake shoes need replacing often?
Anything else should I get?

Hi There, The YRV turbo has

Hi There,

The YRV turbo has a 6 months service interval and it depends on the up-keep of the previous owner(s) on how much has already been done.

For Brakes, what Are you going for? Standard items or upgraded items? I moved from standard brakes to 1st upgrade (EBC Green stuff pads) and drilled and grooved discs, when I had them fitted I had a slightly better stopping distance, but then later on the stopping got worse Sad I am now using D-Sport discs and type-2 pads and what a difference. Note that the YRV Turbo has a bigger disc than the standard YRV @ 246MM, so bare this in mind when buying new discs and pads.

Air filter, I take it you will be using a standrd replacement? Or are you considering aftermarket (fit and forget)?

Spark plugs: I'm currently running on Iridium BKR6EIX which are fine and turn over everytime (had them for over 1 year)

Oil: anything 10w will be too thick. I'm currently using Fuchs Silkolene PRO S 5W-40 Ester Synthetic Oil For High Performance Engines from http://www.opieoils.co.uk/
Also use this in my 300BHP 2.0l Sunbaru Impreza STi.

I had the rear brake shoes done when I had the entended bolts fitted on my spacers. As a rule if the handbrake isn't letting you down then your okay.

Anything else - Depends on what you want to do extra to the car, new exhaust etc.... Wink

Trying to get that balance of cost and quality

I hear what you guys are saying, but for now, I just found out the car has not had its last 2 services!!! So I must do this immediately and cannot afford too much extravagance on top of the minimum required. So trying to do as much as possible, but with decent quality.
So the things that have to wait are:
Exhaust (sorry jpor!)
Upgraded brakes - unless the D-Sport discs and type-2 pads are affordable? Where do I find those?

As for the airfilter, yes I will do the cone filter as well, already have one to be fitted, but will keep a standard new one ready for any inspection purposes Wink

The oil change must be done very soon! How difficult is it to get to the oil filter? Will my biggish hands have trouble? Jap cars tend to be a bit cramped! I haven't checked the engine bay out very much as it is always dark when I get home Scratch one-s head

I think I shall get the Denso iridiums as they are OEM for a lot of high performance toyotas... finer tip than the NGK iridiums as well...

No service for 2 years?!

No service for 2 years?! What colour is the oil? Sad
I hope you got this car at a rock bottom price when you bought it?

For upgraded brakes I went to japaneazi.co.uk but they weren't cheap Sad
Your best bet for now if in urgent need of brakes is to try E-bay, but be careful as some sellers sell brakes earmarked for the YRV turbo but arn't the correct size. I.E look for the correct size @ 246mm, even dealerships have been caught out with this for some reason.

Never tried changing the oil personally, but the oil filter is a pain to get at but not impossible.

oil age and condition

Yes I admit I was a bit concerned when I spotted this... so I checked the oil and its brown, but no obvious signs of imminent failure. Also what re-assured me was the fact that the car was taxed as a disabled car before I bought it, so I doubt the car was seriously ravaged.
I did get a good price on the car Smile
Thanks for the info on the brake discs being 246mm, I didnt realise that and would've bought the wrong set!
I cant seem to find a normal OEM quality 246mm disc though Scratch one-s head

Oh no! I bought a car which

Oh no! I bought a car which was taxed as disabled, and the only way to get a new tax disc for it was to visit the nearest DVLA branch to get it sorted Sad

As for brake discs I beleive the Daihatsu Copen use the same sized discs and pads, so maybe widening your search on E-bay may help there, I also beleive the pads for a suzuki Igni Sport also fit our cars. Unfortunately the YRV turbo is a car you rarely find cheap parts for. Sad but then again it is the same for any other Japanese cars out there Wink

taxing

Yes, that train trip to the nearest DVLA was very irritating! I had to wait over a week before I could drive the car!

I noticed the Copen compatibility, but seems the price is going to still be high. I think I need to get the wheels off and see exactly the condition of the discs on the inside. Are the discs easy to remove fully?

Talk about unethical!!

I checked out the listing you said, and saw the price of £115 plus postage... and then sent a question how much it would be for just the discs.

A few minutes later, I get a reply saying they have put the new separate listing for discs only - went to look at it - £135 + postage!!!

The went back to the original discs + pads listing, and of course they have now changed that price to £159 + postage!!!

I think just out of principle I will not support them...

What bunch of To$$ers, I

What bunch of To$$ers, I would certainly be putting in a complaint to E-bay Sad

Found these :

Item number: 170395489563

But they have them down at the wrong size, but a good price. Also they have 100% feedback etc.. Maybe worth sending them an E-mail to see if they can provide you with the correct size of 246MM discs.

Alternative is there are more dearer units up for sale with Japaneazi (E-bay only) (Website not on-line no more) which I have had many dealings with Tim over the years and has never let me down, and a fair bloke too. Item number: 290366753452

You would`nt have thought

You would`nt have thought disabled drivers would by a little pocket rocket like a yrv turbo,,,but i remember a few weeks after having mine a little old lady stopped me in tesco, and asked me was i selling it Shok thought it was pointless giving her the low down with power, speed,,etc etc..She had driven daihatsu`s almost all her life and loved them, she was gutted when i told her they did`nt make them any more... Sad ..

Changed the oil and filter

Yesterday I decided I have to change the oil... so I put down a piece of plastic on the (wet) ground, jacked the car up slightly just to get my head under there, slid under the car and hey - the drain plug and oil filter are right there, easy to get to, easy to remove and the whole job took me less than 15 minutes! By far the quickest and easiest oil change I've ever done! Smile

Im now using Shell Helix

Im now using Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40, was using same brand but 5w-30 but the Daihatsu area service manager said 30's was too thin. Oil should be done every 3000mls regardless of age although using long life oil like the Helix you should be able to go alot longer.
I have NGK BKR6EIX and been in a couple of years and showing no wear at all!! I do have a set of Denso's but have gone for the longer lasting VK20Y rather than the std IK20's. Didnt expect the NGK's to last this long!

Like Jon said be careful as most discs listed for the Turbo are the wrong size. I know that only ADL have it righ.
Think Tim at Japaneazicarparts has some on Ebay. Regards pads i have EBC greenstuff but think they dont perform until they get realy hot but seem to glaze and make funny noises?

Having a different air filter wont affect MOT inspection. The std filter is expensive at around £25(trade) to £39(retail) why its tempting to upgrade to an Induction cone filter.

Oil filters easy to do, its just underneath near the down pipe. If you want a genuine Daihatsu filter i have one or two for sale Wink

filters & plugs

What type of oil filters do daihatsu use? Are they just stamped "daihatsu" over some other manufacturer? How much are you selling them for? Smile
I am going to have to buy 2 filters (one cheapish one), as the change to fully synthetic will no doubt free up a lot of gunk so will change the cheapish filter for a better one a few days after switching...

Good point about the air filter prices, I shall rather go with an aftermarket one.

I'll try out the IK20 iridiums for the sake of research for this forum then Smile
