Different tyre sizes

Forum:

Hello folks

I am new to this forum and probably I am going to ask a stupid question. I have just bought a 96 fourtrak tdx with 255/70/15 tyres on front and back. The two back ones are needing to be changed and i wondered if i could have 31/10.5/15 tyres on the back and the original 255/70/15 tyres on the front or would this ruin the four wheel drive as the tyres are slightly different diameters.

Welcome. Black and Round

Hi.
Welcome to the site, and no its not a stupid question.

With the mass of available tyre sizes around in imperial and metric sizes, it is confusing.

Due to the fact that you would be only using 4WD in slippy/mud conditions,( drive line is only Part Time 4x4) wleelslip I believe would take care of any slight difference in tyre size. Running on the road in 2WD should not cause any problems. Though I would reccomend fitting the same size tyres allround.

Can some one come forward with thoughts on this issue.

Bang on!

Edward is right,
so long as you only use four wheel drive on loose or slippery ground different tyre sizes front and rear are not a problem. Both Fourtrak and Sportrak are Part time four wheel drive vehicles so on the road when in 2H are rear wheel drive only.

Agree with the above. But

Agree with the above. But make apsolutly sure you only use 4x4 in the worst of slippery stuff, or you will breack something. I would deffinatly recomend you change the fronts as well as soon as you can.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Thanks for the advice folks.

Thanks for the advice folks. I have ordered a pair of general grabbers at2 tyres now from camskill. I might think about replacing the front tyres if the fourtrak goes through its next mot without any probs.
