Engine management light and engine stalling

Forum:

I have a 1992 Sportrak where the engine management light comes on occasionly for a few seconds and when coming to a stop the revs will fall causing the engine to stall which is then a pig to restart. Local garage no help. Any solutions or help would be welcome

i had the same problem with

i had the same problem with my BMW when i got a new exhaust fitted, it wasnt fitted properly and a small gap was left, up the top of the exhaust, resulting in no back pressure to the engine, and stalling the engine. But a plugged catalytic converter can also cause that same problem. A garage can test the cat by drilling a small 1/4 hole in the pipe just in front of and behind the cat. With the engine in park, raise the rpms to 2,000 and feel the air coming out of both holes. If air is coming out of the front hole at a higher speed and at a larger volume than the rear hole or If there is an obvious difference of pressure between the two drilled holes, the cat is plugged and needs to be replaced. If you decide to do your own test, you can close up the two drilled holes afterwards either by having someone weld them up (£10-20) or simply screwing a big metal screw into the hole.
both of these would cause the engine light to come on for a small period of time.
Hope its some help, an you find out what's wrong soon
