F70 and Alloys - Will they fit?

Forum:

I have a 1990 F70 SWB. I am looking for some alloy wheels for it. This is the alloys I ideally want:

On the Independent models they have the wider wheel arches, while on mine I have only the small ones which are part of the body. I think that you can fit wider tyres on the alloys because they are offset? Does this mean that if I fit these alloys to my truck they will stick out beyond the wheel arches? Will it be enough to fail the MOT? Also, are the alloys pictured original Daihatsu ones or after-market?

Cheers.

N.B. The picture comes from the thread here: http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?t=48485

Ebay

I just found a listing for 4 of the above alloys about 40 miles from me, they are on £130 now, but still have 1 day to go. They apparently have some decent tread on the tyres and the rims arn't damaged(so he says), what should I be looking at paying? He has them listed as Sportrak/Suzuki/Fourtrak, are they man enough to handle the fourtrak?

Cheers again.

yea the tread is great and

yea the tread is great and the wheels come off my lwb vitara, they have a offset of -30 if that helps, are they man enough?? im not sure what they are rated at per wheel so not sure, you can buy the same wheels new on ebay so you may be able to find out what they are rated at.what are fourtrak wheels rated at???

i also have the arches off the fourtrak as i cut mine out and made new ones out of metal

Hi. I've heard before that

Hi. I've heard before that wheels for the Suzuki arn't strong enough for the fourtrak, but I've seen a few fourtrak with your alloys on so I am thinking that they are safe, but was just asking if anyone knew for sure. Mine is the older type fourtrak so I can't fit the extended wheel arches without cutting my body about, which I don't want to do. I am just waiting to see if I can use them and if so I'll get bidding as I really want those alloys!

Cheers.

looking at the pic i think

looking at the pic i think the wheels will stick out about 1 1/2"-2" but you could always put some conver belt on the arches to cover them or weld on some tabs and rivet my arches on but then they would be about 8"-10"s wider on each side,i would say pop down and try them but im not in sunday so unless you want to come down to nite to try them.

Thanks for the offer bud, but

Thanks for the offer bud, but I am busy tonight =/. I am thinking about just risking it and running them with them sticking out, it would have to be a keen eyed copper to spot them out 2"..... I will keep my current wheels so if I get pulled I won't be completely buggered. I see the listing is for 4 wheels, I take it you don't have the spare anywhere then?

Cheers.

sorry no spare,most coppers

sorry no spare, most coppers wont bother you as its a 4x4 but if it was a car then they would be all over it,as for mot it should be fine

Do you have the special

Do you have the special longer(?) wheel studs you have to use with alloys as well, or are you using them for your current wheels?

Cheers.

im useing them but i think

im useing them but i think your bolts will be fine with these wheels as the vitara bolts are the same as the ones you have, but if you win them i will swap yours for mine as i now have steel wheels

If you think they'll fit that

If you think they'll fit that good enough for me Smile Maybe a quick check when I come to pick them up if I win, if you don't mind of course. I must say, your a very accommodating chap!

Mine,

Here is a picture of my truck to (hopefully) make it easier to see what I'm on about Blum 3

Blood Red Offroad

Does anyone know if the extended wheel nuts for alloys they sell at Blood Red Offroad have the correct mating surface for the ally wheels?

Those wheels are standard

Those wheels are standard Sportrak alloys. They will fit straight onto a 4trak, and should be strong enough (I used to have a set on an F50 offroader, and they did the job with out any bother). They are a little wide for a standard wheel arched F70, however you can get (with a large cash outlay) plastic wheel arch extensions for this model. Bare in mind the type of tyre might well solve the problem anyway. The acid test is to put your wheel and tyre choice on the car. To be legal you should not be able to see any tread (side wall does not count) if you look straight down from above the tyre, in line with the bodywork.
Even if it does stick out a little you will probably never have a problem. Unless you have an accident, at which point the Police and insurance may pick up on it and charge. The Police may add it to the list of things wrong with your car, and the insurance may use it as an excuse to get out of paying as the car is illegal. Not likely, but possible. If you do fit any new wheels and tyres, tell your insurance anyway.
Having said all that, I used to have 8J 15 8 spokes (wider off set than the wheels your intrested in) on my F80 (same body as yours) with dimond back race tyres on them (big lugges of rubber sticking out all over the place, inc out past the line of the sidewall of the tyre. Never had any problems from the law over them.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Thanks for your comment, very

Thanks for your comment, very useful. I picked up the wheels last night and fitted them today, and I don't think the tread sticks out from the arch. They look great, very please :D. If I crash the insurance will pick me up on the bullbar(don't have it listed in there*modifications* drop down menu) so I'm buggered on that point anyway xd. I've got the MOT this week so we'll soon see ;).

AFTER

Here is the "after" to the earlier photo(very much improved)!

Up Up and away

Just need a nice suspension and body lift now to make it look right.;)

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

He he. One step at a time! If I ever get enough money I will buy a Sportrak or old banger Fourtrak and use that solely for off-road.

I passed the MOT today, great success!

looking good,would look

looking good, would look better with a 2" suspension lift.there is no need to do a body lift unless you put bigger tyres on as it will only make it top heavy and make it fall over more

and make it fall over more

and make it fall over more Ha! Well I definitely don't want that!

What needs to be bought or changed to do a 2" lift, just new leaf shackles?

Edit: And new shocks too? The shackles on bloodredoffroad state that they can be used with standard shocks and brake lines. But will standard shockers really be able to cope?

New longer shackles will do

These from dave at bloodred will just go on bish bash bosh, nothing else need be altered, but if your like me then i like to fiddle, make, design, improve etc these old machines are basically tractors with suspension and the sky's the limit and no - it wont fall over lol

One of my mates bought a

One of my mates bought a Shogun, so I've got to put on a good show for Daihatsus everywhere Wink I don't think I go fast enough to tip it over Blum 3

Just have to point out that a

Just have to point out that a suspension lift is more likely to make a car fall over than a body lift. The whole point of a body lift is to raise the body without raising the heavy bits (I.e. chassis, engin and gear/transfur box). The only reason for lifting at all is to fit larger tyres, to get the axles higher. Or for looks, of course.

springs or shackles will lift

springs or shackles will lift it,std shocks will be fine or you can space them down with 50x50x3 box,i would say if you lift it then get longer brake lines or move the mountings down by 2" as if/when you flex it will pull on the brake line and could brake them

Ah right. I'll take a closer

Ah right. I'll take a closer look next time I can get it on the ramp. I can't afford shackles for a while so I've got plenty of time for planning Wink

Just hope my puny springs can take it!

Edit: I just checked the service manual and I have the "soft" suspension, hence my odd springs.

if its just for looks then go

if its just for looks then go for a body lift as they are cheaper,if you want a body lift give me a shout as i can make them

I don't think changing the

I don't think changing the shackles will be a challenge(I have a ramp ^_^), and with a body lift I think you need to change the range gear lever ect?

Will +2" shackles have any noticeable handling effects or other downsides?

yes they will kill your

yes they will kill your springs and put your caster angle out so the steering will be abit funny and you may get a prop vib as the diff angle will change, you are better of saveing for some lift springs as the problems above should not come with them
