how do i top up the gear box oil?

Forum:

my gearbox seems very loud when driving, i dont know whether its normal or the gearbox oil is low, can anyone tell me how i top it up? (is it normal to hear a kind of slight metallic grating sound when accelerating and when i ease off the gas? seems to be coming from the 2h/4h/4l box) thanks

On the nearside of the box there are 2 identical FLAT hexagonal bolts - 28mm. The lower is the drain plug, and the upper is the level/filler. DON'T touch the other raised hex head bolts, because the hold selector forks in position I hear!!!

Make sure you can undo the filler plug before draining the old oil out. You will need a 28mm ring spanner - it's alloy, so anything else may chew it - and the exhaust can be in the way a bit, so be prepared to slack that off if it causes an obstruction. I had to do that when I first got it and wanted to check the levels.

Fill with EP90 grade oil - and a Slick 50 gear additive has made mine as smooth as cream and silenced a lot of the gear whine. If the filler plug refuses to budge, I'd imagine it can be topped up thru the breather if needs be.

Use a squeezy bottle - confined space.

Filling the gearbox is messy. Get a squeezy bottle that will attach to a plastic tube. Even better is to pass the tube through the bottle's top, inside and down to the bottle's bottom. Fill the squeezy bottle with oil and pump the oil into gearbox - passing plastic tube to the bottom of the squeezy bottle avoids the need to constantly refill the 'half empty' bottle.

To further clarify Mikes comm

To further clarify Mikes comment about Rocky/Fourtrak gear box filler plugs. The filler is on the right hand side, as Mike said. There is a similar nut on the left hand side. It SHOULD have an aluminium locking tab bent over one side of the nut to prevent accidental unscrewing. DO NOT REMOVE THIS NUT. Doing so will then require you to remove your gearbox to regain reverse gear.
To help to fill gearboxes and not get messy. Go buy a bicycle pump with tyre hose fitting. Cut off the fitting that normally connects to the tyre valve. Now use this as a transfer pump to fill your gearbox. Much less mess. If you dont want to make any mess at all, or cant stand grovveling around under the car, take the rubber gearshifter boot off the floor, and then the two individual rubber dust boots off the two gearsticks, and fill through the gearstick holes.

Buy 4 litres. This is cheaper than buying each litre individually, and it is enough to do both gearbox and transfer case, which in my opinion, should be done at the same time. Use the filler plug level to get the correct amount. Off hand, I think its around 2-2.5 litres for the gearbox.

Just to clarify On a Fourt

Just to clarify

On a Fourtrack the gearbox filler plug is on offside (driver's side) of the box. The nut holding the 5th gear selector fork is on the nearside (passenger side)of the box.

I dont know about Sporty's...just wanted to let you know this.
If Dave is correct then the boxes of Fourtracks ans Sportracks are different in this respect.

thanks for the advice

cheers guys thats great. if i were to fill the gear box using the "safe" methods, i.e through the gear stick holes or the breather, how would i tell if i've overfilled it? would it do any damage or have serious consequences if i overfilled the gear box? thanks again for everyones help.

You still have to remove the

You still have to remove the filler plug, as it also acts as the level gauge. Overfilling the gearbox a small amount would not harm it, I suppose. For a complete change, drain the box completely, then find out how much should be in it.
