wheel bearing done....now problem with axle swive?/ is it easy or hard and costly to fix?

Forum:

After spending out 20 quid on a strippedwheel bearing nut!! and replacing the bearing (£another 26 quid) have now been told by my mate that it still clunks and there is play in the " swivel pin??") does any one have any idea what this means and how terminal is it?? Scratch one-s head
Unfortunately my pet mechanic hasnt had time to look into it as he goes to Austria for Christmas tomorrow......perhaps i should have gone aswell rather than spending all my hard earned on this pup of a car!! oh woe sob sob Cray 2

I had to read this about 3 times to translate. Lol. He will be referring to your king pin bearings. There is a temporary fix. Remove your wheel, and grab the swivel housing top and bottom, and try to move it up and down. If there is any movement, then the bearings need attention. Look on top of the swivel housing. You will see a rectangular piece, held in place by 4 bolts. The brake hose also mounts here, with a 5th bolt in the centre. Undo all 5 bolts, and turn the rectangle back and forth, whilst at the same time lifting. It will come out. This is your king pin. There should be a couple, maybe 3, shims under here. These can be removed to adjust the bearings. Replace it all, with a little bit of sealant on the mating faces. Then look under the swivel housing. Same deal, but no centre bolt here. You can also remove shims from here. Cost is nil, and about 1 hour. Replacing the bearings is a little more expensive, and more time consuming, but still an easy job.

Think I may be in for some "other kingy thingy beary stuff" so would be interested in hearing any ideas on cost, also got a bit of play in steering which I'm going to investigate when I do front brakey stoppy roundy thingys. Just bought a couple of new vented discs off ebay for 14 squid and the car came with a spare set on front pads.

There was a guy on ebay breaking a Fourtrack up in Brough near Hull, not on your doorstep but he may well have your seaty strappy paddy bitys and could post to you. Worth a look methinks, I reckon I've got his contact details on my watched items list if his auctions have finished, just do a search under Daihatsu on ebay. Had a brand new driveshaft the other day along with clutches, a 2.8 diesel engine etc. etc.

I'm taking the little seats out of mine but want to keep them to put back in when I come to sell it, makes a bit more space for guns and dead things as they are a bit cramped in the back.

I just bought a steering wheel which should really improve the handling of mine, those splines are really harsh on the palms !!!.

Yeah I thought he was a bit expensive, wanted £20 for the headlamp adjusting knob and the version he had didn't even have one fitted. There really has been a load of bits on Ebay lately so keep your eyes out. Was it you that put up the listing for rear seats the other day Unknw

Virgin, This is going to be a

Virgin, This is going to be a real help to you, lol. Last time I bought king pin bearings, they cost me $22 australian each. Sorry, but its a little bit difficult for me to say how much it would be there. Put it this way, they should be about half the price of the wheel bearings.
If you replace them, you will find steering much easier, as the bearing races tend to end up with grooves in them, from the rollers pounding the one spot (the straight ahead position on the steering wheel) especially if you travel lots of corregated roads. The top bearing also tends to rust, as its up top, and gets little or no lubrication, and suffers from condensation, or water ingress, unless you managed to completely fill the CV cavity with grease, which is near impossible.
Its a job worth doing.
