Topless Fourtrak

Forum:

Can anyone tell me if the rear roof panel on my 96 tdx is removable. On investigation there is a rubber seam around the panel where it joins onto the front roof panel ,would like to take it off on a temorary basis without getting the gas axe out.Any info would be greatly appreciated

Assuming they are the same as

Assuming they are the same as the earlier ones, yes. You remove the rear roof lining from inside, which reveals 4 large screws. There are 4 or 5 bolts along each side, inside under the side windows. There is then a large screw eather side of the rear door, inside, to be removed. It should then come off in one piece. Or alternatively, remove the 5 roof bolts from each side, as well as the rear door trim from outside, up and over the rear door. There are a number of screws under this that hold the resin top to the rear door metal hoop. This way, you can remove it in pieces, 1 Roof, 2 and 3, each side, and 4 rear door hoop. The only problem with doing this is you end up with the rear door sticking up in the middle of nowhere. If you want to do this on a more permenant basis, then get a second rear door, and cut it off below the glass, level with the side sills.
Have fun.

Why not take the rear door off too ?

For something temporary in Summer (well, we had one a couple of years ago in the UK), I thought of doing exactly the same thing.

Providing the rear passengers wore their seat belts, I can't see any legal problem regarding the safety aspect of their being thrown from the vehicle, unless one drove really stupidly off road.

Dont know about over there, b

Dont know about over there, but here the rear door has the number plate and spare mounted to it.
I have done this myself. A couple of years ago, I swapped bodies on my chassis. Over a period of a couple of weeks, I slowly pulled my vehicle apart, but I had to keep it on the road as its my only vehicle. I pulled the rear roof, and the rear door off. I made up a bracket for the number plate, and lay the spare on the floor behind the rear seat.
It actually looked pretty good. Im think it would be legal, same as soft top vehicles, as long as a roll cage was fitted, which there is in later model F75's.

OOPS

... chump-features forgot about the numberplate.

A bit of bodge-work to present the number plate to the rear would be necessary. Thinking about it, the easiest way for me would be to put a spare numberplate on a magnetic antenna mount and stick this to the step on the back of the vehicle. Going really nuts, a numberplate light could be run from the trailer socket.
