Here's an interesting, but hypothetical one:-

There are two identical Fourtraks - one is in two wheel drive but has new all terrain tyres fitted, the other is in four wheel drive but has very worn tyres fitted.....

Which do you think would perform better off-road?

question

I would still go with 4wd and diff lock any day. In my experience, when I have got stuck the tires are usally so filled with mud that they are as good as slicks, and the machine is just relying on her weight and contact area which is therefore ground pressure to get out. The ground pressure will be the same on all four wheels. So running in 4wd will increase your tractive effort.

But I am open to suggestions...

Im in 2 minds here.

1) Common sense would say the one with bald tyres and 4wd, as 2 wheels driving are better than one, but

2) I once had a Suzuki Sierra fitted with 7 inch wheels, and 235/75/15 rubber which was in pretty good nick. I managed to buy a set of standard skinny wheels fitted with non directional bar treads for it once. I managed to go further in 2wd with those bar treads fitted, that I did with the wider tyres in 4wd. It was an interesting exercise. After that, I used the wides for beach and bitumen work, and the skinnys for hard off road stuff.

Depends on the situation I supose... but I have gone past other 4x4's stuck in 4wd at off road sites whils't I've been in 2wd on dimond backs. Tyres are one of the most important desiding factors when it comes to 'will I go, or will I stay... a long time'.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
