15" to16" Wheels & Gear ratio

Forum:

What effect does changing from 15" to 16" wheels have on the gear ratio in precentage terms. I presume the higher ratio will also improve fuel consumption, but any idea on how much?
Does anyone out there have a set of 16" steel wheels to fit a Sporty. Many thanks in advance. GeeCee

Changing from 15-16" wheels will not nesasarily make any diffrance to your final gaer ratio. 31/10.50-15's are almost exactly the same secomferance as a 750 16's, for instance.
As for fule econemy. You probably will see no diffrence if the gear ratio is lifted slightly. If you raise the ratio a lot, then your fuel econemy will most likely go down. This is becouse the engine is strugeling to pull the new gearing, so will need more fule to keep the reves up. You will also find that she dies on steep inclines. As a green laining adeptation bigger wheels and tyres, acompanied by a body/suspention lift are a definent plus. However if all you want is better fule consumption, I think you will need to look elswhere. An LPG conversion will definatly reduce running costs, after a painful initial outlay...
I belive that going from a 215-15 to a 31/10.50-15 is about a 10% increas at the speedo.
