Strange Vibrations

Forum:

Please help – I have a 1990 Fourtrack LWB Turbo Diesel which vibrates/resonates when the engine is put under load. You can feel the vibration through the floor of the vehicle. It is most noticeable between 1600 and 2000 RPM.
My thoughts are that it could be the gearbox mounting – would these be the symptoms? The Propshaft is OK and the vibration is in tune with the engine. There is no lack of power or any other issues. Help!

??

R U sure it is not the UJ joint in the prop? The mounts on the gearbox and the engine are easy to check...get under her and take a look.....wheel out of balance?

Hi
The vibration appears to be torque related, as it is worse going uphill so I don’t think it is a wheel balance issue.
I removed the rear propshaft, ran the car in 4 wheel drive and the fault remained. The Gearbox mount looks OK - but do they harden with age or has it sagged - I don't know what it should look like?
Thanks.

Check the small mount on the right hand side of the transfer case. They usually break under torque.
Have you lost the vibration dampener of the back of the transfer case?
Check inside the harmonic balancer for accumulated mud.

Strange vibrations

Thanks for the reply bundyrumandcoke - I have just been checking my workshop manual for the vibration dampener and cannot find a mention – what does it look like?
The small mounting is OK and there is no accumulated mud.
Thanks

Both of my 'traks do it.

Both of my traks do exactly the same thing at about 50 mph in 5th gear.

I've given up worrying about it, but take the precaution to change gear to get out of the vibration range (about 1800 to 2000 rpm) when I'm pulling heavy loads up hills.

Thanks RF man,
I have checked again and have found a couple of universal joints have a (very) small amount of play. I will replace them and let you know what happens.
Thanks for your responses.

Geez, sorry I thought I had replied to your question about the vibration dampener. Its a lump of steel, basically a bracket with a piece of solid round bar, about 2 inches diametre welded to it, which bolts to the rear of the transfer case. It probably weighs about 2kg. I removed mine after the bracket broke for about the 6th time.
