I have an M-reg 1.6 soft-top Sportrak and I love it, except for the ride; its too hard even on the soft setting (in fact changing the position of the suspension setting switch doesn't seem to make any difference at all). Does anyone know of a way to make the ride softer

The ride is probably due to the rear (leaf) springs. You can soften the spring by removing a leaf, or bending the ends of the thick bottom 'assister' spring downward. However remember that the softer you make the rear suspention, the wors the handeling of the car, especially a short vehicle like a Sporti.
