Hi all
I have a tirfor jockey manual winch rated 300kg which is kicking about in my garage. The question is whether it will be tough enough to recover my trusty Fourtrak TDX if it gets bogged down somewhere or do I need something more heavy duty. I ask because I fancy having a go at some green laning, (when I find one nearby) and as not much seems to be happening locally (Barnsley/Huddersfield area) may well end up solo.

It would depend how stuck you were. How well in, that is. It would probably get you out of mud dragging on the axles just enough to stop her moving on her own, for instance. But you wouldn't want to try pulling a dead car up out of a watery hole. The car weaighs about 2 tonn (2000 kg). Not a problem on the flat, as you only need to provide enough pull to overcome whatever is holding the car in place. But when you start pulling uphill, then you are starting to have to deadlift the car as well. The amout of efort required to move an object doubles for every 5 degrees of inclin (aproximatly). Of course this only pertaines to a dead vehicle. A car being powereed out of a slippery hole, where the winch is just preventing the car from slipping backwards would not put as much load on the winch.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
Is 300kg strong enough
Thanks for the info Nev. I think I will look on ebay for something a bit bigger and that way can be sure that it is up to the job.
