CV Boot replacement

Forum:

Hi

New member and have just got my first fourtrak 2.8tdx. Thought I got a good deal for a 1999 80,000 mile 7 seater but looked underneath and found split rubber gaitor on passenger side. Fortunately it is the out side one so i think this is easier to replace than the inside. Can anyone give a guide on how difficult this job is and what to do? only I am quite useful with a spanner though have not attempted to do this before.

Many thanks
Barrie

Split Gaitor

Hiya mate! Not always as easy as you might think this one! You can often do more damage to other components when attempting this job. I recently saw an advert for the type of gaitors that don't require any stripping of major components to replace them. They are a sort of lace-up affair, I'm told very reliable and quite easy to fit. Anyway, the webpage is:

Have a look mate, might be worth a try?!

Thanks for that link, will give it a try.

Split Gaitor

Hiya mate! Just wondered how you were getting on with your boot replacement? Did you do the strip down method or did you try the link I told you about? Just curious, thats all!

CV BOOT REPLACEMENT.

Hi,
this may help.

Firstly i have never done this on a Fourtrack but have done this on the Daihatsu Charade and other makes of car.
To do any boot you have to get the Cv joint off which is only possible sometimes by removing the whole drive shaft, putting in a vice and knocking the joint off to release the boot.
I found it easier to do the following.

Remove the Hub nut and withdraw the outer CV and shaft from the hub.

Cut the cable tie or strap off the Bell of the inner CV and remove the shaft complete with outer CV, leaving the Inner CV still plugging the gearbox.
This saves you refilling the lost gear oil.

Slide back the boot and remove the circlip off the end of the Spider/tripod joint that came out of the inner CV.

Remove the Spider/tripod joint, leaving just the shaft and the boot.

You can now slide off the boot(obviously cut away any damaged one)and replace with a new one.
All eliminating the need to knock off the outer CV, risking damage or needing a vice etc.

Dont forget to mark the spider/tripod and drive shaft so it goes back in the same spline possition.

Also its a chance to re-pack the CV's with grease, especialy the inner one.

Hope this helps you or anyone else????

D Dave.
