leaf spring / jack-up advice

Forum:

i have just brought a used pair of rear springs from
a spring specialist,

they actually make / re-build etc leaf springs of all types,

i asked about lifting the forutrack up useing the extended shackle technique
and was surprised to hear they can produce me a set of 4 springs
that have been curled up the 2" higher that im looking for,
they say they can re-set the srings and tension them to this,
and even add further leaves to assist stabilty

is this too good to be true??
i do know from previous expeirence that they are reknown as quality folks,
just wondered what you guys think before i go spending the hard earned readies???

Yes. of course it can be done

Yes. of course it can be done. Springs can pretty much be reset to any lift you desire. However, using stock length springs, and putting heaps of arch in them, wrecks your shackle angle. Think about it, a spring, out of the vehicle, sitting on the ground, will have a certain distance from centre eye to centre eye. Ignoring sag from your vehicles weight when fitted, this measurement represents the distance from spring hanger to shackle end. Now, if you put more arch in the spring, this distance becomes shorter. As your hanger cant move, then the shackle has to, and will stand up straighter. At the very worst, this can lead to the shackle inverting on suspension droop, basically the shackle comes into straight line with the spring, then goes up and fouls on the chassis. Now lay a straight edge from eye to eye, and measure from this down to the centre bolt. This is your arch distance.
To prevent shackle inversion, if you want heaps of lift from leaf springs, you have to have longer main leaves made up. This keeps the eye to eye distance standard, but increases your arch distance. There should be no additional cost getting lifted springs made up verses standards.

Cheers
David
