Help on cutout problems Sportrak ELXi

Forum:

I have a 1.6 ELXi Sportrak 1993, when the engine warms up and the temp gauge moves just past the C to normal, the engine managment light flickers on, it splutters and if you let the reves die it cuts out. After cutting out it won't re-start for about 10 mins. when cooled a bit it then starts again.
The strange thing is that if you run it at high rev's the spluttering passes and once up to the edge of the thermometer (normal) she goes like muck off a stick.
Can anyone help me please? It's driving me mad. I need to know where to look for this fault so as to resolve it once and for all.

Thank you all

This same problem occured on

This same problem occured on my mate's Sportrak. It turned out to be a faulty heat sensor which wasn't telling the fuel injector that the engine had warmed up and so didn't need as much fuel in the mixture, so the engine flooded at normal revs.A new sensor cured the problem.

You seem to be on the right track.

You seem to be right (I hope) as there is a smell of petrol when this happens, as I had to get out and push it to the side of the road and there was a stron smell of petrol like it flodded.
It also seems to happen more in warm weather that in cold.
Where is this heat sensor located ??????
Can I order it and chang it myself or is this a garage job Unknw

Thanks

I don't know where the sensor

I don't know where the sensor is,I'm not that clued up, but I'm sure someone will know and they'll probably be able to tell you how to do the job yourself as well. I think it cost my mate £70 to get it fixed at a garage.

Super Service from Daihatsu

Well I contacted Daihatsu UK via their website and left a question regarding the Water coolent temperature sensor and they have told me where it's located. (on the rear of the block by the distributor) and have confirmed that the fault is the sensor that is telling the Engin management system that the engin is still cold and it floods it. So I have now ordered the part and am waiting for the cost.

hi just reading your notes an

hi just reading your notes and spot on with sensor, had same problem with mine and got it fixed at garage although not too difficult to do yourself if competent with that kind of thing although a bit fiddly due to location. I was getting in touch really to let you know i used mine with faulty sensor untill new one came all you have to do is once motor has been started from cold you can disconnect sensor and it will run fine.
it's a little fiddly and helps if you've got smallish hands remember not too let the engine get too hot
p.s. sensor was about 50quid

Thanks

Which side of the sensor do you disconnect Unknw or from what I can see it comes apart in the middle Unknw
It goes into the dist cap at one end and they one side goes into the manifold and the other goes into the loom Unknw
I have already ordered one and am awaiting it's delivery so hopefully it should all be resolved by Friday next week. It's just great to be able to sort out these type of problems with others that have the same type of 4X4. I was really impressed by the service I got from Daihatsu direct as well.

THanks

sensor

the sensor is located kinda just below the distributer and is easiest to access from the drivers side of engine (although easiest is used loosely)it is retained by one of those metal wire like clip things and once this is removed it just pulls off/plugs on
mine is a 92 elxi presume they'll all be the same
