Fourtrack gear selection

Forum:

Hi again, I posted this on the wrong site, so Im trying again. My 'new' N-reg 2.8 TDX recently needed over 1+ litre of oil in the gearbox and since then, Its been a bit hard to get it into 2nd & 5th, when cold. Is this a common problem, can I do anything about it? Many thanks, Clipper.

Fourtrack gear selection

Mine is the same when cold, always thought it was normal, could be that the new oil you put in was a bit thicker so is harder to select when cold.

Yup --- pretty normal, I'm afraid.

Both my 'traks do the same. The gearboxes have both done about 90000 miles (and have both been rebuilt because of trivial faults).

I find that the best thing to do is to use semi-synthetic 75W-90 GL5 gear oil with molyslip additive.

Even then, on very cold days, I find myself having to double-declutch to get into second, from bottom gear.

Actually, it isn't a proper double-declutch because I rev the engine in neutral to get everything spinning at the correct speed. I assume that all the mechanics slow down rapidly because of the thick gear oil and the synchromesh is having trouble running them up to speed prior to engagement. As you have added lots of oil, this would seem to fit with my symptoms and cure.

I haven't had the trouble with 5th though.
