Where`s the regulator?

Forum:

Me again!

I`m in the process of changing the brushes in my alternator. Ordered them today from Lucas, £20+ vat. Whilst looking around the forums I noticed that a voltage regulator has been mentioned with regard to the alternator. Could someone tell me where the voltage regulator is situated and what is its function in the charging system? My old girl is a 1991 F75 Fourtrak if that has any relivance. I`d be interested to know any info about the said regulator just in case of future problems that may arise. Scratch one-s head

regulator

Tich,

Pretty sure it is the little black box directly on the back of the Alternator. £17.59 from Milner off road..but I'm sure they can be found cheaper else where.

Voltage Regulator

Hiya Tich. The regulator is the device that controls the output to your battery and if it's working OK then you should be getting around 14.2 volts with the engine running. If you have faulty regulator, symptoms will include the battery boiling during vehicle use which will mean you are constantly topping the electrolyte level up. Be careful mate as an un-regulated charge can be very high voltage, possibly up to 110volts which at best will only damage your battery but furthermore, the rest of your electrical components will suffer! If you have got a problem with the regulator it's best not to leave it un-checked. The location of the regulator depends on the manufacturer. Sometimes they are nice and easy to change sitting nicely on the back of the alternator, others are tucked away inside and require a bit more work just to get at them. Hope this helps mate!

Pete.

The early Daihatsu's had a se

The early Daihatsu's had a seperat regulaiter (not on/in the aultinator at all). I thought the latter ones where the same. If so you should find it bolted to the inner wing (can't remember which, but pasenger side sounds logical, if that means anything). If so it will be a fairly larg black box, with a multitude of wires coming out of it. Can't realy describe it better than that I'm afraid, and I don't have one handy to photograph.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Voltage regulator

Thanks Pete.
I have posted a bit of an update on the Problems page which maybe you could help me with. As far as the regulator goes, as Nev suggested I have found the regulator which is bolted to the inside of the passenger side wing. This problem is starting to do my head in to be honest. I`m wondering if it could be down to a knackered battery, thats if the feul drain light and the battery charge light can be made to come on if the battery was bad. I don`t know. I`ve put the battery on charge to see what happens. I`m thinking that if the battery is fully charged then maybe the fuel drain light and the charge light will go out. Am I talking nonsense????? :help
