voltmeter

Forum:

Hi everybody, i have a problem with a voltmeter i have fitted to my 96 fourtrak, its not working at all, when the engine is off i get 14v on my multimeter and the v/meter shows no volts, when the engine is on i lose the 14v on the multimeter and the v/meter still shows no volts.I do not want to go back to the supplier until i know its not fault on my fourtrak.
Does anybody have any tips
thanks Spence

I'm asuming the 14 volts is on the suply line to the volt meater? If so then as long as the meter has a good earth there should be a reading. I am wondering why you have a feed when the engine is off, but not when it is on however? Surly this should be the other way around?

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

voltmeter

yes Nev, thats what i can't understand. on the advice of a mate i checked the voltmeter at the battery and its ok, i can only assume that when the engine is switched on the v/meter supply is maybe fed from a relay or something.i suppose i could run fresh supply up from the radio feed or similar.i am also fitting rear quarter lights and found, on removal of interior panel and blanking plate, that water has been collecting in the bottom of the rear wing.Have you come across this before? i have drilled a small drain hole at the bottom of the wing.
cheers spence

I'm afraid they tend to hold

I'm afraid they tend to hold mud, and wet in several places. Thats why their main floor is rotting out.
As for the volt meter, I would take a fresh ignition switched feed from as close to the key as you can get. That should give you as true a reading as possible.

i have some spray grease, so i will spray it inside the wing while i have the panels off.I will have a look at the ignition switch and see what i can pick up, thanks for the help Nev.
