Suspension wont come off.....

Forum:

Hi,

Went out today and spent £180 on new suspension shocks for my K plate Rocky. They look the business but are still in the box coz I cant get the old ones off. How do you get the old ones to unscrew? Turning the top nuts turns the piston, not the nut so im tempted to take out the angle grinder but relly dont want to cock this up. Also, at the back this will be a nightmare as there isnt enough space to get one up there. Also, at the bottom at the front if there was a nut holding the suspension to the pin then tin worms eaten it, but it wont budge even with a little persuasion from the crowbar. Blowtorch could be the next option but I could do with a bit of reassureance from anyone who's done this surgery in the past.

Cheers

PS I know that daihatsu would have done the bits cheaper but im an impatient bugger!

Ok, for the rears, lift your carpet in the back. Under the rear seat, you will find a plate held to the floor with 4 12mm bolts. Undo these, remove the plate, and this allows access to the tops of the shock absorbers. Get a mate to hold the upper part of the shock, as you undo the nuts.

As for the front lower nuts, try a bit of heat on the nuts to loosen the corrosion.

Cheers
David

Although i've never done this on a Rocky i have had the same problem on a few Charades
Firstly make sure the vehicle is standing and not jacked up, then try cracking the nut round sharply. It does make a difference, worked for me more than once.
If the piston shaft still keeps turning, jack it up and lock a pair or two of Mole grips to the shaft, an extra pair of hands helps!!
I got a bit sick of rusted on nuts and bolts, not got an air Impact gun so i bought a 12v Impact Wrench gun that connects to the battery or Cig lighter, about £20 and does the job great!!! Wire brushing the rust off and WD40 or similar overnight also helps and as you sugested heat with a blowlamp.
Regards,
Dave.
