Hijet 993 knocking/crunchy noise when steering near lock


1997 EFI MPV CB42...
last few days i have been hearing a crunchy/knock sound when i turn the steering and it gets near to locking. today it started to do the same sound when i turned the other direction. things to check:
1) track rod ends?
2) wheel bearings?

Crunchy Noise!

Thanks, waiting for my m8 to turn up so we can have a look. i know packing with grease is a temporary fix, but it will do until i get the parts in/done. has to be done as MOT in April.

Does it have power steering?
Check 4 loose/worn belt low fluid level sometimes more pronounced in cold weather and after starting!

had a look at it sunday, we think that its the wheel bearing... did a U turn with m8 in the van and it didnt squeak/knock once! typical!

I did my wheel bearing

I did my wheel bearing recently. Daihatsu only had one so i got a single bearing and the dust seal. I didn't fit it straight away so ended up getting another bearing from a shop that sells bearings as it had some numbers which correspond to a standard size so i got one from there. The bearings I got had a metal cage whereas the original had a plastic cage for the bearings. It cost less aswell and was quicker than waiting for Daihatsu and appears to be stronger too. I through the receipt and box a few days ago so can't remember the size. I should have posted it as it may be usefull to have it documented.


HI Jet Steering

Yes check all of them and the rack but the HIJETS sterring does crackrumble when moving slowly from lock to lock. Someone heard it and was concerened because he could see the rack moving on it's mount. I think because it is forward control a lot of strain is placed on it and it does tend to crack at slow speed more than most vehicles. I obtained a replacement rack which I never replaced and just sprayed silicone oil onto the rubbers It made little difference and has sailed through the French Control Technique 3 times (6 years) since with never a mention. Now some may say that the French MOT is easy well thats not quite true or right as I brought a Sporty over with a new MOT and it failed with a long existing broken rear leaf spring leaf. The rack on the hijet is an odd thing and seems to flex on the body work that it is mounted on. The Piaggio bodies are not that strong and I was cncerned that it may cause stress fractures but it hasn't.

finally bought a workshop

finally bought a workshop manual 993 EFI, waiting for it to arrive from USA than i hopefully will be able to see whats going on under there.

i know that if you have the right measurements on bearings you can get them from anywhere cheaper than dealers, same for motorcycles! thing is... can you return the dealer bearings and get your money back after you have used it to get a cheaper one?

sadly the manual that came

sadly the manual that came from the USA was NOT for my van. it was for a Diesel 1.2 hijet. it was sent back for a refund!
