Setting Valve Clearances

Forum:

Hi All,

I am hoping you can give me some advice. I have a R Reg (1997) Move Plus with an ED-20 engine. My owner's manual tells me to set the Valve clearances to:-

Intake (Hot) - 0.25 mm
Exhaust (Hot)- 0.30 mm

Is this right or a misprint as it isn't usual (in my experience) to set the Valve Clearances when the engine is hot??? And if it is correct how 'Hot' have I got to get the engine before setting the Valve Clearances? Help

Thanks in advance

Kev

They are the right settings,

They are the right settings, you also have a tolerance of 0.05mm's to the 0.25 and 0.3 clearances.
Depending on climate, a cold engine could have quite a variable temperature which affects the contraction of the metal.
An engine run hot would be roughly the same temperature and have the same affect on the metal expansion, so in theory more accurate??
When i set my Charade GTti i did them hot, put the cover back on, ran it again, then had it off ( cover Wink ), checked again and they were spot on.
Not sure but think your engine has shims so you would need the correct thickness to adjust.
