The bumper mounts have corrded and broken when takin screws out and one of the lights is dead and also wires have came loose and melted on the exhaust and need taking back. would it be easier and cheaper to buy lights for the body instead and if you can what type of light would i need. any help please , thanks

Some models had body mounted

Some models had body mounted lights, replace the wiring loom from the plug mounted in the body panel. Remove the blanking panels and insert the lights.

Body lights in Fourtrak

Hi and welcome to the site.

Suggest you search Ebay and breakers for the body mounted light clusters, mine were just blank red units, no fitting for bulbs. I had a similar problem with the short tail pipe/ exhaust gasses, melting the rear light wiring insulation, first I rewired and fitted a chrome extension tail piece to the exhaust, then I managed to purchase via Ebay a set of body light clusters, so now have both working, plus Hi level brake light from Halfords. New bumper mounted light units are available from "Milners", top of page "Parts Dealers".

Suggestion- motor factors have many different rear light clusters available, have a look and possibly make/mod the fixings to replace the in bumper units or search for a company called “Vehicle Wiring Products”,

Bye sportrak or fourtrak body

Bye sportrak or fourtrak body mounted rear light clusters off e-bay. One of the 'your bidding on a wheel nut, rest of car avalible' listings would be good to look at, as these are usually breakers. PM them what you want. Remember you will also need the mountingscrews, and the little plastic inserts they screw into (usually yellow). Ask for as much wiering loom after the plug and socket which ataches the clusters to the loom as well.
Then wire them in using 7 cour trailer electrics cable (plus one odd one for the reversing lights. Take your feeds from the original lights for ease, or go right back to the conection bellow the drivers seat, if you are fairly confident with a multi meter.
Removing the old bumper lights may not be legal, as they were only moved there to meet new EU law. The body mountd lights are covered on the drivers side by the spare wheel, when the rear door is open. The same with several 4x4's, hense the requirment for bumper lights.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Wow

How ridiculous, you are not going to on the road/driving when the rear door is open, whats the point in this? I hate the look of the bumper lamps and am glad I have a 1990 model with them in the body...
Grrrrrr

that is crazy

that does sound insane, the only time the wheel may obscure that light is when your viewing it from the rear left. but i recon you'd have to be virtually along side it???

I belive it was due to being

I belive it was due to being parked, and loading / unloading or being broken down. With the door open the spare wheel covers the rear lights on the side that, if the car which should be, is 'in the road'. This covers the hazzerd signal, and makes the car appear to be further off the road than it is, or even like a motorcycle (only one rear light). I didn't say it was a sensible rulling, just that I belived that was the reason behind the bumper lights.
Unfortunatly if your car was built with the bumper lights, and so came into the country under the test certificat for that design, removing them 'may' be illegal without the car passing a new 'unique vehicle' exam. Which it will fail, as the bumper lights were fitted when the body lights were deemed to be inadequet for EU / UK law.
I have had a 4trak and a Sporti now which I added the body lights as well as the bumper ones, as I find the body mounted lights much better for towing, look better and the revurse lights in them are far better than the one bumper mounted one. However as the original lights were still there and oprebal, the is no problem legally.
I suspect if you removed the bumper lights you would never have a problem with the law... UNLESS you were involved in an accident. Then you could be talking about an illegally modified car, which (in the eyes of the law) is dangerous. This could result in prosicution, and would be a perfect excuse for your insurance company to say you were driving a vehicle which was modified (without their knowing), and therfor your policy is nul and void. Bere in mind just putting alloy wheels on your car, which are designed for that vehicle, but which weren't factory fitted can invalidate your insurance, if you don't inform your policey provider.
All sound nonsense? Probably. But take it from a Civil Servent... That doesn't mean it can't be true.
