New F50 owners HELP!!

Forum:

A friend and I have recently purchased a 1980 Daihatsu F50 RJK from a scrap yard. We intend to drive it to Timbuktu leaving on Boxing Day 2010 to raise a bit of cash for a good cause and ultimately go on an adventure!

Although the car has been sat for 20 years it seems to be in very good condition. Yet we have quickly realised that there is not much literature on these cars let alone parts!? We know very little about the car, not even what the RJK stands for? Does anyone know where we can get a service manual and/or spare parts? Is it possible to use parts from newer model Daihatsu's like the Fourtrak? We appreciate this has to be a bit of an improvisation job but we are going to need a manual of some description as we are not exactly what you would call mechanics!!

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you....

Manuals for these cars were

Manuals for these cars were not eisy to come by when they wetre new. Haines don't do them either. As for parts, put F50 as s aved surch on e-bay to see what comes along over the next few monthes. Engine parts are mostly the same as later modles. The 2.8 Diesel is a modified version of what the F50 has in it. The gearbox is interchangible, though the transfur box is a little more tricky. Mostly becouse the prop flanges are diffrent, and becouse the F50 has a transmition hand break, while the latter cars have rear wheel hand breaks.
All body parts are the same as the F20 (whioch is the petrol version of the F50. Gearbox is the same, except you change the bell housing (4 bolts). The axles are the same as the F20 except the gear ratio is lower in the F20 diffs.
The RKJ just denotes the body type.
Where abouts are you based?

We figured ebay might be our life line. Have found a few parts. Someone is breaking a 2.8 TDX, have the turbo, injection fuel pump and the alternator up for sale.
We are based in london, although both travel a fair bit.

If you PM your email address

If you PM your email address I can send you over an electronic copy of the engine manual and the owners manual. I also have a hard copy of the workshop manual if you need any specific information.

I'll bet. I have the F70/75 one, and that is a whole lever arch's worth of stuff...

Just to correct you Nev, the

Just to correct you Nev, the F20/F50 gearboxes are different, the F20 is a four speed, the F50 is a 5 speed.

The transmission brakes are easily removed as they are the same on both.

Both F50/55 and F20/25 came

Both F50/55 and F20/25 came in 4 speed to start with, and 5 speed later on (if the purchaser had it as an option). The 5th gear is an overdrive which is linked to work off the main gear lever, and is a seperat chunk located between the gearbox proper and the transfur box. This is still the case even on the Indipendent, though 5 gears came as standard on that car.
I have personally owned 3 F20's, 4 F50's, and 2 F55's. I also have known enumeral others of each designation (and even 1 F25) when they were more common.
The only diffrence between an F50/55 gearbox and an F20/25 is the bell housing. Wether you have 4 speed or 5 is up to what the options were when the car was first built.

Hints

I now have my father's F50 tray back ute that he bought new in 1979. May I suggest a front brake modification which makes life much easier.

I've just converted mine to disk brakes courtesy of a local wrecker who sold me all the necessary bits from an early Rocky.

All I needed to modify was the brake line hose from the calliper to the body connector, otherwise everything was so eay and now it has reliable front brakes.

I also suggest you get rid of the terrible old 4.5 inch 16 inch rims if that's what it has and get some Rocky 15 or 16 inch wheels and get some decent tyres. They make a huge difference to handling and even ride.

By the way, does anyone know if a five speed Rocky box will fit the old 2.5 litre diesel. I reckon it would be a lot better to drive with a five speed.

It will, but you have the

It will, but you have the problem of the hand break, as the F55 is a transmition break. The Rocky is breaked on the rear wheels. I don' know if the transmition break can be fitted to the Rocky transfur. Also I am not sure if the transfur is the same ration in both box's. Moreover the output flanges on the Rocky box ar slightly diffrent, so you will have to play with propshafts to make them fit. You can marry a Rocky gearbox to an F50/55 transfur I belive. However I have not tried this particular configuration myself.

F55

Going back to this discussion 5years ago now Nev.
When you refer to "Rocky" do you mean the F70 or the petrol F300
please?

<>/

I was talking about the

I was talking about the Fourtrack. Known as the Rocky in Australia?? The F300 (Sportrak/Forenza) is known as a Rocky in America I belive???

Point is, i meant the Fourtrak. The Sportrak (F300) is a totally different gearbox and transfere.

The Fourtrak (Rocky) came in petrol too.

F20. Pre Fourtrak SWB 1600 petrol.
F25. Pre Fourtrak LWB 1600 petrokl.
F50. Pre Fourtrak SWB 2.5 Diesel
F55. Pre Fourtrak LWB 2.5 Diesel
F70. Fourtrak SWB 2.8 Diesel.
F73. Indipendent Fourtrak SWB 2.8 Diesel.
F75. Fourtrak LWB 2.8 Diesel.
F78. Indipendent Fourtrak LWB 2.8 Diesel.
F80. Fourtrak SWB 2ltr Petrol.
F85. Fourtrak LWB 2ltr Petrol.
F300. Sportrak / Forenza 1600 Petrol.

There are other's. But I don't know the others off the top of my head.
