4High is for surfaces where the extra 4x4 traction is handy, such as sand/muddy fields/green lanes/whatever, when normalish progress can be made.

4Low is as above, but with reduced gearing and altered torque to allow for climbing steep inclines, extracting yourself from the ooze, and other high traction situations.

Locking the hubs increases control in downhill runs when engine braking can be handy. Are yours Autolock hubs? If not, you'll need to lock them when you want to gain the advantage when in the rough. With autolock you have to reverse to unlock them.

to activate the 4wd after i put the gearstick to 4h/4l do i need to reverse to engage 4wd

Manual hubs

Do not engage 4wd when the hubs are in the free position when the vehicle is moveing (makes funny noises). Stop when changing to different range.(eg. H to L). Don't use 4wd on hard road surfaces. If your rear wiper switch is close to the 4wd switch like mine was move it to another "hole" the same size further away to prevent tne likelyhood of accidently turning on 4wd (prevents funny noise).
