What's all this about a gearbox bolt coming loose?

Forum:

|I have been told that, prior to me visiting this board, there was much talk about gear selection probs. being caused by a bolt in the 'box working loose on Sportraks.

Where is this, exactly, and do you have to drop the gearbox to get at it?

Dont know about sportraks, bu

Dont know about sportraks, but on Fourtraks, there is a bolt on the left side, looks like the oil level check bolt, but with an aluminium lock tab, which MUST NOT be removed. Also top right side of the gearbox is another which MUST NOT be removed. Acidental removal of these renders some gears unusable, meaning a gearbox removal and disassembly. I know, been there, done that. Had the top right bolt work loose and drop out, instant no reverse gear.
Also, these gearboxes have a bit of a habit of working the output shaft locknut loose. That isnt really a problem, as the gear is held in place between the gearbox and transfer case.
Hope this helps
Cheers

dealer that i brought my fourtrack off, was telling me that they can get a prob with 2nd gear, and if you drop the propshaft there is a bolt that can come loose, which u just tighten up. but this is only what i heard, so couldnt swear to it. but he did say most got fixed because of recall.

As far as I am aware Dave this is not a problem with the Sportrak.
There is a well known problem with 4traks...regarding the main shaft nut working loose in the gear box..this causes difficulties with 2nd and 3rd gears..it was caused as far as I know with poor tolarances at the factory with regard to the nuts.It does require a box drop to get at the said nut...pain in the a...
Having said all that my 87 Trak does not have the 'curse of the nut'
I dont think you should worry about this since you drive a Sporty.
