The garage says flushing engine oil should cure the noise but I am dubious.

hi, i'm a new daihatsu driver and i don't know if my hijet is supposed to make this noise...but i suspect not. it sounds sort of 'ticky ticky' so i guess it's tappets...but what ARE they and what do i do? is it serious and can i drive it? any help gratefully accepted...
