Fourtrak 2.8TD engine variations and power output

Forum:

Hi,

I am in the process of fitting a DL-42 engine into my Land Rover. I have noticed that there are quite a few differences in power outputs on the engines depending on year produced.

I was just wondering what the differences are in the engines and how you might identify what engine/power output you have. Was it just the addition of intercoolers or different diesel pump/tuning, turbo, injectors or were there internal changes to the engines???

I just want to know what engine I have, and the interchangeability of components (internal and external) incase I have any problems in the future.

I know these engines are bullet-proof but there seems to be very little detailed information on them.

long n short : 2.8 na, 2.8

long n short : 2.8 na, 2.8 tdi, 2.8 tdi + intercooler, thats it

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Differences between non turbo and turbo charged engines

Quote: (I was just wondering what the differences are in the engines and how you might identify what engine/power output you have?)

DL 42 = N/A

DL 52 = TC + Intercooled

Th significant difference between the engines will be their Cylinder Compression ratios,
The turbo charged version will have a reduced compression ratio compared to the naturally asperated.
So basically you cant bolt a turbo onto a DL42 and expect it to operate correctly!

The DL52 is the more powerful engine because of the use of a turbo charger and intercooler.

Just doing a bit more

Just doing a bit more looking

There are these models:

09.1987-10.1990 78BHP @3800rpm 126lb-ft @2200rpm Is this non turbo?

09.1987-10.1990 93BHP@ 3400rpm 164lb-ft @2200rpm Turbo non-intercooled?

11.1990 - End 113BHP@3400rpm 184lb-ft @2200rpm Turbo Intercooled?

So, with the early turbo engine, fitting an intercooler was the only change to the engine?? I have also noticed some have a black rocker cover and some bare alloy. Is this just cosmetic?

Rocker covers - Belt or chain

Is that definitely correct Parrotveasey81?
Only reason I ask, is that when I bought my TDX Riviera 2, the seller told me that the cambelt was done @ 97,000 and mine has got an alloy rocker cover.

I'm guessing that both types are interchangeable though.
Am I right with that assumption?

One other thing, can anyone confirm if my engine has a cambelt or chain?
The vehicle is a 98 TDX Riviera 2.
