loud hijet noise

Forum:

i just got a hijet and it makes a funny noise, is this normal? i have heard of tappets and think it may be due to these, trouble is i don't know what or where they are, or what to do? can i drive it? will it die? how much will it cost to fix (as a girl i always get ripped off)..please help as i'm already very fond of it!

Engines make all sort of funny noises ....

.... some are relatively unimportant, but some are quickly terminal.

Tappets sound like a metallic ticking at the top of the engine. As you rev the engine, the ticking gets more rapid, until it sounds like a continuous clatter. Noisy tappets sound the same if the engine is cold or hot. Engines will run with noisy tappets without too much problem.

I can sympathise with being ripped off .... I'm a guy and have been taking engines apart since I was 11, but sometimes I still get fooled by some scam artists. The trick is to only get fooled once !

how's it go
..... Fool me once .... shame on you
..... Fool me twice ... shame on ME !

thanks

glad it's not terminal for the poor van...i have to find a good mechanic or else start learning! it's awful to be at their mercy...but at least nice people on the internet are willing to help out!

Noisy tappets might mean a re

Noisy tappets might mean a relatively simple valve adjustment (very likely to be this) or at worst a worn camshaft and bad followers, which would virtually necessitate an engine overhaul.

Adjusting the valve clearances is not difficult but I would say you would need a little mechanical know-how to do it yourself...Get your local friendly mechanic to check the valve clearances and adjust the tappets..should not take more than half an hour to do...cost £10-15

thanks!

i'll do that today (if i can find a friendly mechanic, which i doubt, i don't think they open the bonnet for less than 50 quid in london!!) fingers crossed!!
