Ignition Switch Problem - Please offer an opinion....

Forum:

Hi all, I am a recent convert to the Daihatsu fan-club having recently purchased a 1990 Charade CS with my Girlfriend as her first car. We're very happy - car has lots of character and performs exceptionally well.

Occsionally however when you put the key in the ignition it will not turn. Not to any of the stages, it is as though it was the wrong key. This happens even though the steering wheel lock hasn't kicked in yet...? When you lock the wheel on purpose and rotate it etc. it makes no difference. Wiggling the key and very slightly adjusting the angle the account for possible wear or whatever has no effect either.

Then after a time it will suddenly just twist (?) - My worry is that it will leave my Girlfriend stranded sometime soon. Would appreciate all tips, tricks and advice - from simple suggestions, up to options regarding swapping barrels or DIY repairs of the igniton mechanics.

Thanks in advance...Paul

ignition lock

Try a puff of graphite powder. You get it from the hardware store.

Re. Graphite Powder

Wombat, bought C.K Graphite Powder will try and work it into the lock mechanism, hopefully it will do the trick. Thanks for your suggestion, & appreciate your help.

Ignigtion switch

Hi,
Reguards your ignigtion switch I know what I would do is change the switch completely with a new one and a new key or you might find that the key will break off in it then you will be in the s**t not only will your girl be stranded it will cost you to get a locksmith out.
Its probable the tumblers sticking inside the lock you can try a bit of WD Oil it might free it but I would laugh it off and get a new one you know you'll have to in the end so do it while she's safe indoors.
If cash is a problem try your local breakers yard they might help.

wd40

Never put WD40 into a lock. Always use graphite powder. The oil in WD40 attracts dust and dirt leading to further problems. - This is according to my old locksmith mate.

Replacing unit

Cheers Alfie, will do that - have lubricated unit with graphite powder. Plan on keeping a close eye on it & if it lets us down again will go the route of the breakers etc. Many thanks for the replies on this one folks......
