Where is the Auto Box Dipstick

Forum:

Hello All,
I'm trying to locate the auto gear box oil dipstick for this car. Can't seem to find it. Does anyone know where it is on my car? It's the 2001 model F Speed Engine K3-VE2.
I'm only looking to see the color and see if it could do with a change.
It's just the Mrs reporting that when she puts the car in reverse, she can hear some humming noise. Although I've not had any issues yet.
Many thanks

Dipstick location

If it is the same as the YRV Turbo, the dipstick tube should be on top of the gearbox, to the right rear of the engine block as you look at it from the front. Mine has a red plug on the end, so not a 'ring-type' dipstick.

If it's the same, that is.

But in the absence of any other more knowledgeable replies, it has to be worth a look. Smile

The pics

Good Evening,
Ok, i have done a brake job and the brakes seem better than before.
I managed to take some pics. Could someone please show me where the gearbox dipstick is:
That's the right hand side of the bonnet.

I think it might be that rubber dipstick thingy. When I pull it, its feels as though the rubber just wants to expand and no open up.

Looking under the body of the car's right hand side.
I believe that to be the oil drain plug.

But can't seem to find a place to refill from?

The Red top part

Hi you are obviously missing the obvious here Wink Your photos show the dipstick Smile (especially the close up of it on Photo 3) Its the round red top part. As to refill you have to refill the oil through the dipstick hole I'm afraid Sad

Edited to Add:

BobF has the technical manuals for your engine. Give him a shout as he only charges a £10 for electronic copies so maybe a worthy investment going forward Smile

Transmission Fluid Colour

Thank for that.
I have now had a look at the colour of the transmission fluid, here it is...

Anyone thinks it needs changing?

I did see a mechanic about this and he thinks that the color is OK. It shouldn't need changing

Yes! Inspection every 3 years, replace every 6 years

The service intervals for your car are in the maintenance section of the cars manual (For the YRV turbo that's section 13 page 13-4 Maintenance Schedules) the autobox on the YRV Turbo every 3 years Check or Inspect. Every 6 Years Change or Replace. Got mine done 2 years ago together with a new Autobox filter element. I can only think yours will be the same.

Do not take the colour from the dipstick as a proper indicator, as mine showed cherry red on the dipstick, but when it was drained was black/blackcurrant coloured. Unfortunately Daihatsu Autoboxes are a Achilles heal and are prone to failure if not properly maintained. You have been warned. As for the autobox filter Daihatsu service garages arn't aware of them nor about the auotbox servicing (no mention in the actual service booklet for it to be done), until you mention them and can be found on the parts CD, they usual cost around £50 if they have them in the country. If not it's an order in from Japan. Also worth mentioning that the Manual mentions DEXRON II or III oil for the Autobox, I have gone for DEXRON VI as II and III are not worth it.

I would be more inclined to

I would be more inclined to follow the manual as it states DEXRON II or DEXRON III, however, I'm open to suggestions if it means longer life for the transmission.
So if you used DEXRON VI, has it been worthwhile and safe?

Hi,

Hi,
Ok so I made a mistake last time I checked the ATF. The engine must be on and warm when checking for the ATF. When I did that, it was no longer reddish. It was more black than red.
So an imminent ATF change is coming.

Dexron II & III are old Grades

Yes DEXRON VI is safe. The DEXRON grades mentioned in the manual would have been around 15+ years ago, times have a changed.
Some interesting info about DEXRON III and VI;

If you are changing the ATF then would also recommend getting the ATF filter changed as well. Think of it like changing the Engine oil. You don't just change the oil you also change the Oil Filter as well. When I had the ATF changed in my car I got a new ATF filter. These are a Spongy type element, when mine came out it was crusty and well past it's job of filtering out impurities. You are best looking up the part number for the type for your car. Easily best to ring your nearest Daihatsu Service Garage up. If you do a search on here I believe there are alternatives than Daihatsu such as a Blueprint part maybe available at a cheaper price. Good Luck.

Ok, I had a read on : http:/

I good read. Probably will consider the DEX 4 stuff.
In the meantime I'm concentrating on just the flushes. Have used DEX 3 for now (Triple QX). It was the only brand available at purchase. But it will remain in the Trans for a week until I do another drain and refill.
This time, I'm refilling with this from Amazon:

Again, this will also remain in the trans for a week until another drain and re-fill atleast until I can see some changes in colour from black to somewhat reddish.
Let's see what happens
