New Member, New Car

Forum:

Hi All,

I finally found a car I have been after for years and bought a 54 reg Sirion Rally 2 at auction. However it has not come without it's problems and that's what I'm wondering if any of you kind fellow members may be able to help me with?

The clutch is a bit of an issue, it bites right down at the bottom so clutch control is difficult. Also when gearing down it is quite hard to select a lower gear. There appears to be a couple of inches of slack on the pedal movement at the top before you can feel any resistance. Could this be something as simple as an adjustment or new cable or something much worse?

I also have a couple of engine questions / issues. I have what sounds like pinking under load but I suspect this may just be down to needing a service so I am going to give it fresh fluids, filters and plugs in the week but it does also sound a little cammy, if you get what I mean? It's not quite a cam rattle as it's quiet at tickover but when revved there's a definite hint of cam noise. Is this just a characteristic of this engine with the uprated cams being in it?

If BobF is on here still any chance of a service manual?

Many thanks all

Andy

Try adjusting the clutch cable (under the air filter). It'll probably cause clutch slip if there's no life left. This may help the gear selection, but it is a bit of a tempramental gearbox - sometimes it feels slick and sometimes really stubborn. Bob uses fully synthetic 75/90, I've got some but haven't had time to change it yet!
Wouldn't worry about the pinking, but if it's really bad it might be the lamda sensor ( I'm sure someone else will know more about this than me), but the cam rattle doesn't sound too good! Could it be the chain tensioner?
Facebook has a Daihatsu Performance Enthusiasts page if you want any more help, they're very knowledgeable, and you'll find Bob there!
