terios 2001 power steering problem

Forum:

hello my new buddies

i have had the terios for nearly a year love it Smile

terios el 2001 1.3

the problem i have is the power steering pump / belt

the past few weeks it been squaling like a old cat being strangled, mehcanic had a look and a mean a quick glance and said it was the power steering pump needs replaced Unknw

the problem was when the car was stationary and you touched the wheel to turn left or right, the belt would slip and the pump pully would stop. however the belt was maybe loose and i asked the mechanic to tighten it and his reply was there is no tensioner on that pump.

so i go and buy new pre loved pump from ebay after a 3 week hunt , and belt , fluid ect ect
only to find when the old pump was taken off there is a tenisnor :/ so the pump was changed new belt on and the problem is still there, belt it tight and both pumps work perfect.

please can some kind person shed some light on this ?? i really have seen new grey hairs and a extra wrinkle on my forhead if this gos on i could be gone in few weeks Smile

thanks in advance

mike

also must add

it seems to be pulling to the left when i let go of the steering wheel when driving , i dont know if that has anything to do with it, front left tyre wearing more than the others

Hmm.

First. You need the Steering Tracking Properly. If it is pulling to the left constantly and you have a tyre wearing more on the front. It is tracking and could also need new Tie rod Ends.

Pulling one way could also be a Sticking Brake Caliper !! But I suspect the first suggestion.

Is it screeching the second you turn the wheel or when you are at a full lock Unknw

If the second you turn the wheel you will need a replacement Steering rack.

Or one or more of the pipes could be full of crap and the whole rack need a good flush.

Sorry cant help or suggest anything else from here. Wink

thanks for reply

yes it defo needs the tracking sorted as the steering wheel is not centered, it seems to pull to the left slighly when driving stright, also the steering pump and belt work when the car is moving and turning left there is no squeal its seems to be when i take a right the steering gets heavy and you can feel the belt slip or at slow speeds. when sitting to take off its heavy on both sides

could it be the steering rack needs flushed as the pump was changed but he never flushed the system, also i had a quick look this morning and the belt can be tightend another half inch could this cause the problem

the wee jeep has served me well the past year and it only has 80,000 miles on it. i think i will find a new mehcanic for this task as the last one couldnt even find the adjuster and i have a feeling its not tight enough.

its there anything I can try Unknw maybe do myself Unknw flush the system , or any magic product (wishful thinking)

new steering rack and tie rods on ebay secound hand parts around 100, how much roughly would the labour cost?

thanks Mike

problem solved see info

well after buying a power steering pump and having it fitted, it turns out it was not the ps belt nor the ps pump causing the problem, it was a worn aux belt thats connected to the ps belt on the same pully , so it was slowing down the belt on the ps pump if u know what i mean. long story but for anyone out there with same problems check your aux belt is in good con before buying a pump. just as one problem is solved my check light has poped on code reads ££££££ lambda sensor pre cat .looks like its beans on toast for another week Biggrin
