Hi Jet overheating sometimes

Forum:

Hi....my Hijet occasionally overheats.....the temp gauge goes to almost max and then after a while will suddenly drop down to below mid level. Also on journeys I can sometimes hear the expansion tank bubble but this may only happen once on a journey. If it was my head gasket failing as has been suggested wouldn't the bubbling from expansion tank be constant or at least more than just once on every trip (have left it ideling for ages with no probs).... has anyone out there had similar experiences or have any suggestions.

Anyone out there got a manual for HiJet efi or know were I can source any info.................cheers btwix

hijet overheating

Yes I have had this problem - fit a switch so that the fan comes on sooner.
Also had similar problems with the expansion tank, don't THINK its the head gasket? Still working on the problem, but it seems to me that the 'Max' mark on the expansion bottle is too low and the level needs to be higher!

Thermostat

To get through its MOT mechanic rigged up fan so was alway on but that didn't solve prob and I wasn't too happy about knackering fan so put it back the way it was...... have you had a look at your thermostat? Not sure about expansion tank level but top up water almost every trip now by taking both caps off cooling system and bleed valve the topping water through rad, bit of a pain but seems to help if done regularly.

Overheating

Hi guys
I had an occasionally overheating EFI Hijet. the symtoms were
1 the engine would over heat at the beginning of a journey then cool down
2 I could hear bubbling in the heater matrix behind the dash

Water system bleeding sometimes eliminated the overheating but it always came back
The only cure was a new cylinder head gasket and that has prooved successful

Hijet overheats (its the law)

Ive had my diesel hijet for a fair few months now, its the 1200 diesel version to which ive added a romahome camper body, and Im pretty happy with her on the whole however she can be a little cow when she wants.
On picking up the truck in Kent and heading back to London she seemed fine until I came off the motorway and slowed down and I watched in despair as the temp gauge went off the scale, followed shortly afterwards by a phone call to the ebayer whom I gave £700 of my hard earned money to.
Imm sure you can imagine the conversation " its never done that before" yeah right you little **** if I wasnt broken down at the side of a road I would pop back and read you your fortune and have my money back, " I dont want no trouble mate just bring it back and Ill refund the money,
"I cant bring it back you mupet its overheated at the side of the road and Im going to be late for work"
Just to improve my mood and day this was what happened to me next in a garage where I managed to coax the truck to,
Me " hello mate I need some water do you have a tap somewhere?" him "You buy at machine" Me ok where is the machine" Him " outside " Me "thanks very much" **** under my breath I go outside and find the water machine and its screen wash Im starting to lose my mind buy now and seriously regret buying this pick up truck I go back in and again ask the staff for a tap where I can get water for the cooling system He then pointed to the Evian as the only water that he had so i paid a pound a litre for 4 litres and expressed to the shop keeper my gratitude for his help I dont think he understood me he was probably dreaming of eating curry and being home in some warm place.

So anyway I managed to get to work 1 hour late and spend my shift practising voodoo on the seller of my truck, long and short of it Id bought it the engine overheats and Im pretty stuck with it.The first thing I did was flush the cooling system and check all the pipe work for leaks the radiator caps for fit and prayed that it wasnt the head gasket gone.
after the above jobs I would get about 35-50 miles before she got hot not so much when moving but slow down or stop and up went the temp gauge to an alarming area enough to make me switch off and wait before removing cap and very slowly (so as not to crack head)topping up the water.
I had a good think about this engine Ive worked on Lombardini generators in the past and they are a good solid unit I pressure tested it and although lower than the book states they were a fraction down and didnt show any drop that would cause problems, I then thought about the cooling system its pretty poor most of the radiator gets no air flow ( look how piaggio have cut the front of the porter to allow airflow)the water that ends up in the expantion tank doesnt get sucked back into the engine and the tank is tiny.
So I carried out the following
1) Switched the radiator
2) Fitted expantion bottle from hilux surf and the overflow from this goes to the original exp tank
3) I bolted a fan to the front pulley
4) cut off and replaced a few bits of hose that looked iffy.

results
mixed to say the least On short journies great on motorways I use the fan to bring temp down if needed and I allways check water is full before I leave ( and carry spare water evian so expensive)the temp seems to rise when travelling uphill but will come back down on flats or downhill but there is a point where if I dont catch the temp with the fan it will get very hot to the point of overheating but not quite to a panic stage but it means stopping and messing about.
So have I cured the problem well sort of but it isnt perfect but who cares I get 70 MPG from my campervan its happy to toodle at 50-55 all day as long as I keep an eye on the temprature and I really do love my little diesel truck.
Is there any way to cure hijets overheating? who knows its a challenge trying to sort them out and if they didnt overheat they would be perfect wouldnt you agree and as it happens I spoke to the owner of a piaggio 1400 diesel pick up at fleet services who stated" if it didnt overheat after running for an hour it would be great" he told me that despite having an 06 porter, ( in fetching fire engine red which he bought to replace an aging and overheating hijet)that it seemed to drive great for an hour and a half but then he could hear the coolant bubbling into the expansion tank and it would overheat just like a hijet.
so I have decided that if you want a small hijet or porter truck get used to it overheating as thats what they seem good at.

PS anyone know how to rewire the immobiliser on a diesel hijet some little **** broke in and ripped the plug part from its wires and I cant for the life of me work out where the wires go

thanks for listening.....................Mike

PPS im always after parts for diesels if youve got any get in touch
yes ive got another im doing up madness I know but they are addictive cheers.........Mike

Immobiliser? Have you checked

Immobiliser?

Have you checked that the sprung red cap is seating properly into the pipe on top of the engine? Also, that the correct cap is fitted.

1995 & 1998 Hijet vans and 2003 Extol

Overheating Hijets

I have properly fixed a couple of overheating Hijets and you need to know they don't all overheat for the same magic reason.

Firstly they are highly prone to sticking thermostats, the thermostat is under the thermostat housing, which is pretty much bang under the hand brake lever. It's really easy to change, just take the seats out, then the centre support bar with the handbrake attached, then get a nice 10mm socket on a long extension and a UJ and you can get all 3 bolts out. You do have to undo the little pipe that bolts onto the inlet manifold to get to the tight bolt. Then you'll have to do the coolant re-bleed etc. I think these sticking thermostats are the cause of much bigger problems, if your van has been doctored with a fan override switch, it has radweld in the coolant or the rad caps are really mashed then its most likely been overheated a good few times in the past.

They are also prone to a leaking rad cap, and the hose clips under the radiator rot and crack, and the head gasket fails.

As I've typed long description of these faults loads of times now I've wrote a big overheating hijet guide on my website here http://www.daihatsuhijet.co.uk/hijet-overheating-problems-head-gasket-or-not/ which will give you lots of background information and help you fix your overheating van once and for all.

hijet overheating

Hi,
I've got an N reg Hijet and since I had a new head gasket fitted I've had problems with the temp gauge pinging up and down constantly, with it being returned to the garage and without them finding a fault.
Recently we 'overfilled' the water, and since then it hasn't done it anywhere near as much, sometimes it hasn't done it at all on short journey's! So personally I think you are right about the 'max' mark.
Still trying to find out how to fix it totally.

Head.

Try thoroughly flushing the whole cooling system, including the engine and make certain the radiator is not blocked. Check the thermostat opens ... take it out and boil it in water, make sure it opens fully. Then fit a new radiator cap since the pressure spring in the cap might be old stuck.
If that fails then I suspect the head gasket is fractured/leaking. As the engine gets hot the cylinder head expands to block the leak. Eventually it will blow the gasket.

Thermostat

Thanks for the advice, though have never flushed a water cooled system, is there a particular proceedure for this vehicule? Have looked for thermostat but nothing jumps out as being obvious..... thought maybe its at the rear of engine which is behind seat which is not very accessable without putting car on ramp, thats mainly why was after manual.

Re: Hi Jet overheating sometimes

On the diesel version there are two pressure caps fitted and presume the petrol version has a similar layout. Have you taken the front grill off and removed the radiator cap situated near the top right hand corner? If not, you will find an air lock has probably occured. Refill/top up the system with both caps removed, then when the lower one starts to overflow refit that cap, continue filling the radiator with anti freeze and then replace cap when full. Check your expansion bottle level regularly, when the engine is cold, after it's had a good run. Is the electric fan kicking in? If not the terminals may need replacing on the two wires leading to the large resistor block fitted to the fan cowling near the bottom of the radiator as they sometimes give problems. Sorry I don't have an efi manual only a diesel version.

Hijet overheating

I always wanted a 'hot' MPV, I certainly have achieved this. My 993cc Hijet SE thus far has had two new head gaskets and it has only done 65000 miles! It has done just 9000 miles since the last head gasket was fitted and has just started to overheat again, filling the expansion bottle when hot but not sucking it back again when cold. I am therefore having to keep topping the radiator up every day. I have fitted a switch so that I can turn the cooling fan on early and I have also cut out the plastic 'honeycombe grills at the front and replaced them with a more stylish metal ones. This certainly lets more air in to the radiator.

Has anyone else out there had problems like this, particularly with the expansion bottle? Happy Daihatsu motoring.

Latest..
My Hijet now gets hot with the temp. guage nearly reaching maximum and then after a short while drops back to normal. (I keep the fan going right from start until this happens). The radiator and bleed valve caps have now been replaced and it now draws coolant back from the expansion bottle on cooling. However I am still loosing coolant somwhere.

I think that it is now time to part company! Cray 2   Cray 2

Regards David.

overheating

David,
This may sound over simple, but have you checked your thermostat housing for cracks or leaky gasket? I had a similar problem as yours and the mechanics wanted to charge me for a head casket when it has only the thermostat housing - cost me £24 for a used one.

HI Jet overheating

I have a 2000 V plate1.3 EFI Van which has an intermittent problem with overheating.

Initially I sprayed the electric fan terminals with WD40 which cured it. It has returned none the less at the most unwelcome times and on checking, the hoses are not pressurised so I suspect the seals on the Rad Cap or both Caps. The easiest to get to beneath the seat seems the mostlikelyas I have smeared red rubber grease on the seal which improved the problem for a while. To reduce the problem in an emergency I use the heater
and fan on full which rapidlybrings things back to Normal. Notsogood on a hot day but will get you to the next layby. I have left it ticking over forageswit no problem as long as te fan kicks in. I think a regular spray on the terminals is advisable regardless. Yours sounds the same as mine will suddenly drop back andI am sure apart from the caps the fan switch is sluggish after lack of use.

I would like to get replacements and a new thermostat as the coolant levels have remained static, so I have dismissed head gasket failure, plus the van is a rocket. Living in France supplies are more than diffcult they are impossible. Can anyone help in letting me have a stockist who will either send to France or to a UK address?

On a different subject, but still on the Hijet has anyone had paint dssappearance while using a pressure washer? I have always used them on Sportraks but suspect the quality of PIAGGIO paint in comparison is to blame. My Talgate has just started to flake off (SILVER).

On Manuals there seem plenty of the diesel ones on ebay but not the Petrol. I think there is a CD version on ebay at the moment although these are notalways as good as the paper versions. Cost on a Daihatsu original will be huge whilst the CD version is about £3.99 I have both f0r the Sportrak and if you feel upto printing then it would be cheaper to print off the CD manual which in the case of the Sportrak Original (£89) is identical.
All the best for 2007 and I hope this helps
Mike

HiJet Paint Quality

Yes,
I have had paint dissapear when pressure washing!!!

It would seem that the paint quality is a bit hit and miss on these hijets, it reminds me of when one could buy a Ford Transit in primer and paint it to your company's colours, Ford seemed to forget that primer absorbs water, hence loads of Transits with paint problems and rust!

I have wondered if the Hijet shells are stored with only there Primer coat on??

Over heating Hijet

When people replace cooling fluid, they forget to Bleed the heater as well, leaving an airpocket in the system.
If you have a heater, open heater temp switch to hot. Remove the heater valve near the top of the radiator.(Its the black rubber cap) Remove both radiator caps (Engine and top of radiator) Fill radiator until coolant starts pouring out of both the heater valve and the engine side. Replace cap on engine, replace heater valve. Continue to fill system from radiator until full. Run engine until cooling fans swutches on and off a couple of times. let engine cool down then refil radiator.

Over Heating HiJet

I agree, it is vital to bleed these, I also think its a good idea to give them a good (back)flushing.
After refilling the coolant I would run until warm and switch off and let cool down, refil and then run until the cooling fan switches on a few times cool down and refil.

Hi Jet Overheating

Hello,
Well i guess i have got exactly the same probs asall the other Hi Jet owners.
No apparent head gasket blown, but bubbles into the expansion tankwhen engine gets realy hot.
Having to top up and bleed before every long journey.
Fitting a by-pass switch and warning light to put Rad fan on when required.
Temp hardly moves from bottom when vehicle is moving fast and constant, but rises as soon as when needed to stop at lights etc, or park up.(in which case i use the fan switch to bring down)
But, and this is a big BUT.... if after driving a long way and temp has rissen up a few times, and brought down under control, i find that the expansion tank is full, and whatever overfrows is gone forever, not able to suck back when engine cools down.... so the next time i have to top up , as per the norm.
Also when starting from cold, and topping up at front Rad, the water flows through rad very fast, could it be the thermostat stuck open Unknw and where is it anyway Unknw Also when bleeding to top plug on heater rad the water does not flow out in a steady stream, but comes in rushes, is this normal?
One last point for now.....when i top up, i fill with water upto top rad cap, and put pipe on heater pipe as this is highest pointlifting pipe up higher than heater rad, wherupon i top up with water till bubbles stop rising, doing it this wayi know i have purged system of air and it is full. BUT DO IT WHEN COLD, as you have to put rubber cap back on pipe end, and i'd sooner do it cold than scolding hot .
Well these are my symptoms, now i want answers, can anyone shed a little light on this unusual situation

Stuart

sorry for the late reply

have you checked ur water pump or themostat yet????
the water pump pulley tends to go specialy if ur hijet is surfering from over heating....
best way to check is by taking the belt of and seeing the play, maaking sure it is turning right and hasnt develop a wobble.....
for the themostat best you take it out and firstly check the rubber gromet around it and see if it hasnt loosen if you have any doubt just replace the rubber gromet, now with the themo best you check it by using the boiling water test and see if it opens and closes right...
also check ur pipes for any knots or crack or any signs of damage or tension if found then replace pipe straight away, also check the radiator cap to see if the cap sits tightly wen first pushed in, if not check the rubber gromet around it, if its loose then replace that also.....
the temp position in a hijet is normaly in the middle, and the fan should come on when the needle gets to around 85% if ur needle is the same then that is normal,
now about the head gasket has it been replaced recently?????
if head gasket was replaced recently did you replace it ur self????
am sure you know the signs of a head gasket going????
only reason am asking if it was recently replaced, some times the seals dont sit right which can also lead to hijets over heating, if it was this then buy some gasket seal and go over the seal with it, you can buy these from £2.99 and most 99p stores have them now

oh just realise, rather me trying to explain where the hell the themo is, just pm me ur email address and i'll email you a picture showing exactly where it is?????
also aany info for checking....

Funny heating system

Harvey
Well i'm still driving it and wondering, usually do about 100 miles every other day checking and bleeding system.
Say 50 pmh on motorway, the needle is mostly at bottom, staying there till i slow/ stop / etc when it rises , my switched fan takes care of thst.
Sometimes it does run in centre, with fan coming on as normal, but myself i like it at bottom.
Realy think this can go on for ages, getting nowhere, so i'm just driving it , putting water in it , and generally enjoying my driving, as like Suzette i also think it is a great little workvan.
So if i get any more news or info, i will certainly share it with youy all

Regards Stuart

Hi guys

the following are what needed to be check if your hijet is over heating -
bleeding is the first one which everyone should know by now...
the themo switch some hijets have a 3 wire and some a 2 wire these tend to go after a while, try taking them off and seeing if any current passes through if not then you will need one of these which will cost around £10quid...
also it could be the thermostat stuck open, if you dont know how to check best take it off and test in boiling water to see if it is working correctly, if not buy a new one there only cost 15quid....
and lastly the head gasket there are afew ways to test this but you guys know all of them....
anyway these are the only reason why most hijets over heat....

Hijet over heating

Yes, indeed it seems a common problem. Mine too but only when it rains!!! The gauge will register max and then drop back down to normal within minutes.
I have covered 12,000 miles in 15 months driving up and down between Cumbria and The Charente in France and can only say that my admiration for this strange wee vehicle just goes up and up. You may have seen my other post asking for help with a seized cooling fan.
The previouse owner bypassed the thermostatic switch and the fan has worked fulltime ever since I have owned the van.
I love it by the way.

Cheers

Thermostatic fan

Suzette
It is a very simple job to put a switch/warning light,in the wiring circuit.
I have done mine, as the cooling fan isn't meant to be running full time.
Just run a twin wire from both sides of the thermostat switch, and put a on/off switch and warning light(Neg side of your switch) on your dash somewhere......doing it this way, you will only byepass the thermostat when you actually swich on ! the Thermostat switch in the radiator will still work itself when the temp dictates, and your new warning light will come on also.
Hope it is of any help to you

HIJET Overheating I solved it

my father has a 97 Hijet and it's been overheating, we tried everything, it was doing the same as yours then I took the rad cap off of the pipe that runs across the head I noticed that there was some corrosion where the cap tightens onto it turns out that althou things looked normal when the car was ticking over it was infact losing water via the expansion tank as the rubber seal on the in line rad cap wasnt fully sealing i rubbed the metal down put a new cap on the pipe above the engine and no more overheating
( although I call it a radiator cap it's not the cap on the front of the car on the radiator you need to lift the nearside passenger seat (UK Model) you can then see the cap.

HIJET overheating

Thanks Tonycq
My '95 Hijet was overheating (first time was on the way to the labour ward with my wife about to give birth to our first - not recommended for blood pressure!), bubbling expansion tank, constant refilling required etc etc and the rad cap (engine side) was indeed split. Living in Bumpoke, France, 50 miles from the nearest anything I cleaned up the corrsion on the valve seating, glued the split back up and then glued a cut-down tractor inner tube patch on top to hold it all together, bled the system, refilled and fingers crossed so far so good. Temporary fix of course while I source a replacement from Blighty. You are a star, thanks again.

Overheating 1300

I've only had my 1300 since December having previously owned a 993 which never gave a moments problem. I only got rid of it as I saw a newer one with only 26000 on the clock - what a bum move that was!

Anyway I've had three instances of overheating so far this year, all on longer journeys after 30 miles or so (the 6 miles to work trip causes no problems). I'll be driving along merrily then all of a sudden the temp will go up to the top without the fan cutting in (and the fan works if all is normal because it was tested a month ago by the Daihatsu people in Bognor following its first overheat). Turning the internal fan on doesn't help - in fact when this has happened there is no heat from it suggesting that the thermostat has shut and there is no hot water getting to the rad and heater matrix.

Sounds to me like a sticky stat but I need someone to tell me where the hell its situated. The 993 was easy as it was sitting nicely on the top, under the rear cover plate but I can't find it anywhere on this one.

Help please folks.

Your overheating 1300

I have some really good diagrams of how to dis-assemble the thermostat. There is also instructions on how to mod a switch so the cooling fan stays on longer. I've never tried this myself. Private message me an e-mail address, and I will forward the diagrams to you. Or, if you like, send me a postal address and I will post a CD of (incomplete) workshop manuals to you.

Maybe this will help?

hi there m8 can u send me the diagrams thankz m8 i have a hijet 1300 efi an is overheats all the time an the fan dont cut in wat you think it could be if ya can help get back to me thankz ever so much ps or if any 1 can help bi sendin me sume diagrams i would be so thankfull thankz all

overheating hijet,,, 'no way !'

can somebody please advise me on this already well documented/covered problem with hijets overheating,,,,, ive run my 1999 1300 petrol efi and found bubbling expansion tank ,deflated pipefrom inner rad cap (red hot) but a cold radiator itself!! now im obviously not a mech but could this be water pump Unknw ca someone please shed light on this as i know not a lot,, thanks for reading this, nic

replace water pump

so has anyone tried to replace their water pump? i'm giving it a go in a couple of days but haven't done it before - looks relatively straight forward for some car models but i'm wondering if the hijet is among them!!

otherwise i'll take the hit and go to a garage with the part and ask them to do it.

my hijet overheats when it's really pushing it on the motorway and creeping over 65 mph - all the coolant seems to boil, go into the expansion tank and disappear into the big wide world. it kills me to pay £5 for 2.5 L of antifreeze to make my 50:50 mix with de-ionised water - i wouldn't do it if it wasn't for the fact i've just had my radiator re-cored as i thought that was the problem, and i don't want it to clog up with deposits from all the rapidly evaporating tap water.

i've taken the thermostat out entirely, so i know that's not impeding the flow of coolant, and given that i've topped up and bled coolant as per instructions i can only think that it's the water pump.

can anyone advise on how difficult it was for them to replace? i'm driving to spain with it in three days so i need to crack this problem!!

(i did like the suggestion of changing the pressure valve cap for a new one - i'll give that a blast as well).

thanks guys,
DrRamore

Temperature gauge up up ...

Hi everyone.
I'm new to this forum .
I had the same problem twice I spoke to a old time mechanic and he recommended two things to do:
Get a thermostat with a few degrees less in opening temprature I believe the original opening temperature. Is 84 degrees Celsius.
Also he recommended to drill a one (1) mm hoe with a drill.
I did not tried any of the above it because that problem did not happen again with my Hijet van.
You should pay attention to temperature rises because engine seal and other problems may occur and hijet it's prone to that kind of problems.
Good luck

Bleeding :)

Hi all

I was wandering if anyone could help me I have put a new radiator into my Hijet and am now having problems with my heating system. It works for a very short period of time and then appears to blow off all the heat. I think my problem maybe because I have not bleed the system so well. Can anyone give me any suggestions, as I am unable to get hold of a manual and so am just fummbling around.

Thanks for your help.

efi water loss overheating.

I was at a loss to explain a cold heater, gurgling, bubbling sounds from heater matrix, expulsion of water from engine etc. I had bled the air out via the bleeding tube to the left of front radiator cap, cured a few days. Replaced cap with a genuine one of EBay? Cured a few weeks. Replaced thermostat, cured a few days, cleaned pressure cap (engine top) sealing base i.e. metal pipe. Put on rubber grease cured for a few weeks. Run without heater motor on during hot day engine speed rises and falls alarmingly, only on tick over. Revs pulls perfect. Water going to expansion tank not returning on cool down .Time to find out once and for all the problem. Seats out engine started few checks first jumper lead to check earths no difference. Pipes and wires for fuel seem fine. Engine getting warmer running fine then after a few sharp revs to bring temp up the revs started to rise and fall at tick over, followed a few seconds later by water discharge into expansion bottle, turn engine off, wait a couple of minutes then restart everything normal then exact time of water discharge to expansion revs rise and fall etc, out with thermostat ( still closed but I did not get scalded), although hot definitely as hot as it should have been on a boil. Off with the metal pipe in the shed a good clean a grind of all sealing/mating faces for pressure cap. After a paint job try pressure cap blow down pipe whilst blocking other end should have been impossible but could blow with ease, examine cap for the next hour before I found the almost new cap had been the problem all along with the small valve letting water out through bad sealing way before engine reached temperature hence cold heater, air entering system and all the symptoms of a massive overheat. Causing the water to be ejected and not enough cooling to suck enough coolant back into the engine, so much for genuine parts. I will let you know if the tick over returns to normal in a couple of days when I take it out for a trial. Thanks to the forum I had a better understanding of what to look for.

Hijet overheating

Hello all,

I have a 1.0 Hijet EFI that I bought to repair and use for my own business.

It needed a new exhaust and some new fuses for the electrics which were all fixed and everything was fine. Until the drive home...

The van temp gauge went right up, overheated and conked out on the dual carriage way. Radiator smoking. Not good.

My mechanic sent the head gasket away for engineering tests (I've probably been had here, I know) and there was nothing wrong with it. Pressure fine, no leaks or cracks, etc...

So does anyone know what could be the problem? I've been reading and I'm thinking it may be the thermostat? There was an advisory of a leak on the last MOT so where could this be coming from?

I'm a novice when it comes to mechanics but I'm trying to learn bits here and there.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Rose.
