TIMING BELT OR CHAIN????

Forum:

I own a 't' reg Fourtrak Independent diesel 2.8 turbo and am just giving it some TLC; oil, water, belts, wax grease etc. I've looked in my manual and was suprised to see I need to replace a timing belt instead of having a chain. I've checked with a dealer and they have also said I need a belt BUT.... under the hood there is no plastic cover going to the top of the crank shaft. There is a horizontal plastic case mid way down the engine, is this it? I just don't get the positioning and the width of the plastic cover doesn't seem wide enough for a timing belt. Any one who's similarly confused?? Thanks in advance

The timing cover, that goes horizontally from one one side of the motor to the other just above the crankshaft pulley, is plastic for those motors with timing belts. If the cover is alloy, then the drive is by gears.
I would expect the timing belt drives both the camshaft, and the fuel pump. These motors are not overhead camshaft, but run pushrods, and overhead rockers. The camshaft runs beside the motor under the manifolds.
