engine temp indicator problem?

Forum:

Hi guys,

I have a daihatsu charade. Recently, I had the head gasket changed due to overheated engine. I wonder what the prblem is with the temperature indicator since I checked it constantly while driving and I noticed that it didn't even reached the middle. I just noticed it that I overheated the engine after it stopped. WHen I popped the radiator cap open, the engine temp indicator just moved to the red area. ANyone has experienced this also? By the way, the engine overheated because it ran out of water due to a crack in the radiator hose.

Well, for a start, there need

Well, for a start, there needs to be coolant in contact with the sender for there to be a reading, so if you lose your coolant, it wont show up as hot.
You may need to pull the sender sensor out of the block, and give it a good clean. Surprisingly, I have found that propriotory radiator sealants, like Bars Leaks, can coat the sender units, and partially insulate them from the coolant, giving a lower than accurate reading.

Cheers
David
