99% of the time overheating

99% of the time overheating issues are due to the reasons "if theres mud" says, you need to describe the problem and why you have done what you have in greater detail for us to try and help.....

daihatsu f20 boiling?????

started tonight by taking off the water pump to inspect closely and its fine and workin, wile i had that off i ran the hosepipe around the block to flush out any mud or silt from past trial events, bit muddy but nothin un usual, did the same to all the water houses and rad again bit brown in colour but nothing out the ordinary, the thermostat was removed a wile bak to try sto it boiling, the fans are big twin ones that were ok at keeping my v8 rangy cool. the rad has not stat built in only things i found a bit strange are as follows, expansion bottle cap not a tight seal, the house that comes off the water pump that feeds the heaters and quick warm system quite hard to blow down by mouth till i blew it out with air line. and i wonder maybe if the rad has an internal blockage as its more than 7 years old and the truck is a trial buggy and lives in mud pretty much, so hear is my new plans i have a bran new 2.5 litre transit rad and was going to graft that in with all new houses etc and then re mount the twin fan in front rad see if that helps, still any ideas will help thanks for all your help guys thanks ad's

options

blocked engine water jacket, new thermostat, blocked radiator, adequate fan cooling, bent cooling fins, etc

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Thermostat

Thermostat is stuck in closed position.

just had a thought

is it an air lock in the water system? did you massage/squeeze the water hoses when you filled it?

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Remove the electric fans,

Remove the electric fans, these are most likely the cause, and check to see if the original or aftermarket radiator is fitted.

If all the obvious issues have been addressed, then look at the fans and rad, these are very slow operating items. Basically the temperature rises very slowly, this means the fan switch does not react in time, and it can overheat before the fans kick in. If the fans are manually operated then are they sufficiently large with enough airflow capacity.

Many fit alternative radiators to these vehicles, most do not have the thermal capacity to dissipate the heat.

The combined affect of these two alone is overheating, particularly at tickover when water movement is slower still.

Did you set the vehicle

Did you set the vehicle heater to the hot position? if not the valve to the matrix will be closed and nothing will pass through.

If your coolant is brown you have a problem, neglect, they need a 50/50 mix of anti freeze. Anti freeze main function is corrosion inhibition, if you have none, or little in it sounds like internal corrosion has set in. Anti freeze must always be used at all times, not just in winter.

Flush the system out with a hose, fill with clean water and cooling system cleaner and follow the manufacturers instructions for use.
Drain and flush again to remove any trace of the cleaner, then fill with a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze.

The fact it is used as a trials vehicle has no bearing as the cooling system is sealed, nothing should get in. The expansion bottle is not fitted with a tightly fitted top as air has to enter or escape.

My F20 is used purely off road, always in very heavy mud, is 32 years old, and still has its original radiator. The cooling system is like the sea in the Mediterranian, lovely and blue.
