YRV starting problem when hot

Forum:

Hey guys, wonder if you can help me. Im having real problems getting my YRV to start when its hot. Have to put my foot to the floor on the accelerator and pump it for quite a while to get it to start if the cars hot. Any ideas?

Sounds like a sensor issue.

Sounds like a sensor issue. Could be either the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) where it isn't picking up the right mixture and telling the ECU it's fine to start. When you press the accelerator all the way down, you are adding more Air into the system.
Also when you start the car and turn the key to ACC do you hear the Fuel Pump? Also do you leave it a second or 2 before you turn to start position to get the car cranking up?

I take it you have the car serviced regular?

This could be heat related if

This could be heat related if everything else is working correctly, i.e. fuel injection system.

Some vehicles are prone to fuel evaporation caused by excess heat. This is mainly on modified vehicles, or vehicles where heat deflectors and shields have been removed.

Try a simple test: run the vehicle until its hot.
Switch off and leave for 2 minutes.
Try starting the vehicle and see if it is difficult.
Leave it for 30 minutes to cool and see if it starts normally.

If it is difficult to start after 2 minutes, but starts normally after 30 minutes then look at heat as a problem.

Well when my partner takes it

Well when my partner takes it to work in the mornings, it starts pretty easy and the same when he comes home but if we go out shopping and have to go to a few places it's hard to start. I was sat for 10 minutes trying to get the thing to start last week! Ive replaced the coolant temperature sensor, given it a full service when i got it not long ago and changed the plugs. When i go to start the car i cant hear the fuel pump prime but then ive never been able to hear it. Sometimes when trying to start it does have a slight mis-fire which goes away if you rev out.

If you have changed coolant

If you have changed coolant temp sensor with no luck,

Some likely culprits are the inlet temp sensor,

Or

More likely as you describe its a bit hesitant when it does restart, it's could be flooding due to the cold start injector sensor, The sensor should not be activating the cold start injector when engine is warm, but if the sensor is duff then it maybe doing so whenever you turn the key.

Wont be the TPS (throttle position sensor) if the car drives fine otherwise, A TPS fault also throws the check engine light on.

If you cannot hear the

If you cannot hear the injector pump kicking in then its this, or more likely its control relay contacts.

When the ignition is switched on it should give it a burst on the pump to prime the system back to pressure. This is normally around 5 seconds, but can vary according to how low the fuel injection line pressure is.
