Siezed rear drum brakes on Sportrak

Forum:

Hi all, I've just brought a `96 Sportrak. It's in pretty good condition but to be sure I put it through a full service. Thankfully, no major problems but it does have siezed rear drums - apparently the threads for the 'puller' bolts have been stripped so there's no apparent way to remove them?

Has anyone had the same problem and if so, how is the best way to deal with it?

Drums

The drums are extremely awkward to remove. Have you fully backed off the adjusters? You might need to use a 'claw' puller or rubber hammer to break the rust between the drum and hub. On re-fit smear a little grease between the drum and hub.

Sodding rear brake drums...

Hi,

I tried to lever off my siezed (puller threads x threaded) rear brake drums. No joy, they're solid. Any other ideas? I'm gonna phone the local Big 'D' Dealer today to see whether thay can help... Sad

Heat.

Check you have fully released the adjusters to clear the linings from the drum - a lip on the drum edge will prevent the linings sliding from the drum. Its useless unless the adjusters are fully retracted.
Assuming the adjusters are fully retracted, try heating the drum where it contacts the hub. Use an electrical heat blower/paint stripper gun/hair drier. Not too hot and no flame! The expansion should crack the rust - beware of using rust releasing agent with heat ... fire !!

Foggy, Use two big screwdrive

Foggy, Use two big screwdrivers to lever the drum off. Have a big metal hammer handy, as you lever each side, hit between the wheel nut studs, quite hard. This will help spring the drum off. Try to lever and hit evenly round the drum. And hope you dont have a big lip on the inside of the drum, cause thats going to make it more difficult. Patience and perserverence will pay off in the end.
