2.5 ltr diesel engine - non start.

Forum:

Hello all, just a quickie. No 3 heater plug has sheared so the head will have to come off to remove it. I need the tappet and head torque settings, anyone have them to hand please? I am advised that not having all heater plugs working is the prime cause of non starting on this engine. It will bump start no problem and the filter has been changed also the injectors serviced but will not start on the key, any suggestions? All help appriciated.

non start

yep having the glow plugs working helps does the glow plug light warninglamp light up when you first turn the key , you should also be able to hear a click from the relay in the engine bay but you may need the bonnet open to hear that also check the earth and live connections that are connected to the glowplug metal bar i have had those undo themselves in the past

good luck

2.5 diesel non start

Thanks ant69, BUT...the engine is in a'64 chassis Landrover with manual cut out and manual heater plug controls although the electric side is tested and good, apart from No.3 being sheared off hence the question about needing all 4 to start. Any idea of the tappets and head torque settings?

Thanks, Dieseldog.

Can't help with the setings,

Can't help with the setings, but I can say this. I had an F50 (the car these engin's came from) with one glow plug out for over a year (as it would not budge when I tried to fix it). It always started up, even on the coldedst frosty winter mornings. About ten seconds of glow (on the dash mounted push butten, as the glow position on the key barel was dead), and away she'd go on 3 cylinders, cloud of smock as the diesel in the non runner was chucked out the exhorst. Than after about 10-15 seconds, no 4 would kick in as it warmed up enough to ignite the fuel.
Does it turn over well, or does it sound a little slow. The main reason I found for non starting was bad earthes on the battery. Try putting a set of jump leads (thick ones) straight to the starter.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
