There is a common problem where both the fuel and heater gauges go off scale on a full tank of fuel. Happened to me once in 500,000 kms of driving F75s. Your problem is probably a faulty sender unit in the tank as the gauge set up is fairly simple with a couple of resistors which create the off scale problem.
It could also be a faulty connection at the tank or a damaged rear harness - another common problem. If it is the harness check around the back left hand corner of the car where the harness often wears.
Nope, you have to drop the tank to access the sender, a pretty easy job.
