Refurbushing Charade Alloys

Forum:

Hi, I wonder if anyone can give some advice? I have some alloy wheels on my 93 Charade and they have thin lines of what I assume is corrosion (salt) between the lacquer and the wheel. I have rubbed down first with Autosol, then with wet and dry, and when the lacquer is removed, the marks disapear.
My problem is that it has taken ages to get the lacquer off by hand, and as I hadn't got all the old (but sound) lacquer off when I resprayed with new clear lacquer, I've got an uneven finish.
My question is: Is there a chemical way of removing just the lacquer such as paint stripper (Nitromors) or will that damage the alloy underneath?
Any advice gratefully received.
